Valve launch a Beta for Remote Play Together - Invite Anyone, no Steam account needed
25 Feb 2021 at 8:36 pm UTC

I was thinking "No Linux? That's terrible, c'mon Valve get on it!" but then looking at the article it seems like it works on Linux as long as you have the Steam client. Suddenly the size of deal shrank way down.
I mean, this wouldn't stop most Linux gamers from using it, since most Linux gamers already have the Steam client anyway. There are some who don't because they object to Steam's DRM, but surely that objection would extend to this service. So, if you'd use this you already can because you have the Steam client, and if you don't have the Steam client you wouldn't use this.
Still be good for them to get it handled, but feels way less urgent than I first thought.

Google, Bungie, id Software all under fire in a new Stadia lawsuit

Quoting: t3gI can’t wait for Stadia to die out since it’s one big circle jerk here. I get it... Stadia runs Linux but it’s closed off.
I don't think you understand just how much Stadia is funding Linux graphics and Vulkan tools.
I'm not sure anyone does. I get the vague impression they've maybe been doing some of that, and I've tended to assume they must be because there's things they'd want improved to make Stadia work better, but as far as I can tell they've been pretty dashed quiet about it. Do you know anything about what they've actually been doing?

the 'place' and 'fig' keys are now freely configurable
Now I'm really curious, what does the 'fig' key do?
Well, now that it's configurable it will give you either dry or fresh figs. Fig newtons are still in beta.

Quoting: GuestClass action is no action, the only ones who profit are the lawyers
So just to be clear on your perspective here, what would you recommend instead? No class action suits allowed? Rigorous regulation of corporations to make class action suits unnecessary? Some kind of state-administered pro-bono class action suits so those suing get the money?

Mintreport and its system tray applet do pretty much what you want. But I guess the tray icon is easy to ignore.
The latest version might be a bit of an own goal on that front. Used to be, the little shield-shaped thingie would turn colour when it wanted more updates. Fairly noticeable shift, the whole icon would turn red. And I think it was green or blue when it was all up to date. Just now looked down at the icon; the current version is always white and when it wants you to update it just puts a little extra bob, a little orange something-or-other, at the bottom left of the shield icon, covering less than a quarter of it. Doesn't exactly pull the eye, I'm pretty sure I've tended to update less often since I installed the new version.

Linux Mint want to remind you to run updates

Automatic updates are not terrible, but as a not-particularly-techy user I do prefer to choose when I'm gonna do updates, just because they take up bandwidth and there are fairly often times when I want all my capacity for e.g. a meeting, or downloading something different, or whatever. And there are times when my internet connection seems to get a bit wonky and I don't want to update then because my experience is that when updating dies halfway through there's a definite chance the updater will get fucked up.

Automatic updates block me from that decision about when I think it's best, and worst, to do it. So yeah, I don't know enough to have much idea what updates I should apply, but I do have some opinions about when I want to run the process.

Quoting: PublicNuisanceThe majority of humans are dumb. Shocking. Most people are too lazy to even perform basic maintenance on their car let alone their computer. Gotta clear that Netflix backlog first, they'll update later.
Computers are way easier to do basic maintenance on than cars, especially these days with how locked down cars have become. Unless you're just talking about putting in a bit of oil (which I no longer need to do with my electric car).

NASA has always run a fair amount of Linux. They invented the Beowulf cluster after all, which arguably was a major impetus towards the domination of Linux in supercomputers.

Crusader Kings II gets a monthly subscription for all the DLC
19 Feb 2021 at 6:43 pm UTC Likes: 6

I instinctively dislike this idea. But, devil's advocate for a moment . . . So, the game is free. But it has three million DLC. You acquire, you download it, you play it, you wonder what you're missing but you don't feel like buying them all. And, it's an old game. So maybe you want to get the full experience, but once you've gotten the feel for that you'll be moving on to CK III.
So you do the subscription, fiddle with a few games with all the DLC in all their glory for a few months, then can it and get CK III instead. You've satisfied your curiosity, and a few months of subscription is way cheaper and less hassle than buying all those masses of DLC.
So it feels wrong, but there's a case to be made for it in this situation.
