Quoting: NeoTheFoxI think we need our own server for this game! I've played for a bit, but it would be more fun together. Can we make some kind of a poll to see even roughly how many of us are here? I'm willing to host it
I've been looking for a server to join that hasn't been built up yet, so I'd definitely be down for it! I've been playing single player a lot lately, but it definitely is better played with others. (Not that SP is bad by any means, though!)

The perils of crowdfunding for Linux games: Eco edition
16 Jun 2019 at 7:01 pm UTC Likes: 2

I just don't get the obsession with integrating voice chat with games. We've already got Discord, Steam, and other applications for that, and the more middleware you slap into your application, the more platform-restricted it gets.

I don't think crowdfunding is to be avoided at all costs; I feel like crowdfunding devs with a proven track record for Linux support is usually a safe bet. In the end though, like any other investment, it's a gamble, so it all comes down to how much you want to risk for the potential reward.

Yay, just what I always wanted, built-in DRM support! :/

Factorio 0.16 is out with artillery, cliffs, more high-res graphics and more
15 Dec 2017 at 2:46 am UTC

Quoting: stretch611I bought Factorio a year ago when it was shortly after 0.14 was released. It was release quality then, and as mentioned, better than most "released" games, even at that point.

Since then, they have updated some content, but mostly have improved graphics and optimized code. I have a fairly high end machine and I notice a difference. There are people on the forums noticing a 25-50% speed difference. All these speed increases while adding content and graphical overhead at the same time. Pretty remarkable
So what you're saying essentially is that they're the polar opposite of the ARK: Survival Evolved devs. ;)

Seriously though, Factorio has been a great game for a very long time! I beat it back on version 0.11 or earlier, before it was on Steam or had multiplayer, and it was an awesome game back then too! It just keeps getting better.

Bastion on Steam has been updated to use FNA

Quoting: shelloflightI'm so excited about this! I couldn't play Bastion on my steam machine due to a bug where direction inputs on a 360 pad would stick after being released. I hope they fixed it so I can replay one if my favorite games of all time.
I'm not 100% sure, but I played around with movement for a few minutes and it seems the deadzone issue was fixed by the port. I tried a lot of moving and stopping and couldn't get it to trigger, where it was pretty easy to trigger in the past.

Basically the older version of Bastion had no/a really small deadzone (expanded area around center of analog stick's axes which is considered no input) so if the analog stick came to rest slightly off-center (which they often do, hence the need for a deadzone) it would register as movement in that direction.

Valve makes adjustments to user reviews due to review bombing with 'histogram' charts
20 Sep 2017 at 3:51 pm UTC

There are IMO legit reasons to review-bomb, Ark actually being a good example. It keeps getting review-bombed because they keep releasing paid DLC for an unfinished, poor-performing, buggy game, and they keep promising to optimize it and not doing so. I used to love Ark even though it ran poorly when I got it, but they've managed to make it perform so much *worse* it's now unplayable on my system.

I think dev behavior is a very legit reason to give bad reviews, too. If, for example, a dev came out and said something hateful and bigoted, I'd not want to give them my money no matter how good the game itself was.

I also think review-bombing does need to be pointed out to potential customers, ideally with an explanation of what caused the review-bomb, because it can be used for the wrong reasons too.

I'm almost certain the reason Valve made the histogram charts is in response to PewDiePie's fans review-bombing Firewatch because the publisher filed a DMCA request against PewDiePie because they (understandably) didn't want their game associated with him.

Hearthlands Is Exactly The Type Of City-builder A Lazy Sunday Needs For Linux Gamers

Warning to folks using multiple monitors:

The version of LWJGL that this game uses has a bad bug where upon startup in fullscreen or exit in windowed mode, it will attempt to shut off all but your primary display. (I'm assuming; I only have 2 monitors.) When I was on an AMD card with the r600 gallium driver, it would just shut off my secondary monitor, but now that I've switched to nVidia w/ the proprietary driver, it causes my GUI to wig out so bad when it does this that I have to reboot to fix it.

DoubleFine Ceasing Spacebase DF-9 Development, Releasing Code For Modders

Although I am annoyed that I wasted my money on Spacebase: DF9, I would still encourage people to support Early Access games if they're appealing. The trick is to pay attention to how the development has been going before buying it. I should've taken Spacebace: DF9's incredibly slow development as a sign that it wasn't a good buy. I made the mistake of assuming that being backed by a reputable company would ensure its continued development. Now I know that the only good sign is frequency and quality of updates from the devs.
