Editorial: The Nintendo Switch will use Vulkan, why that doesn't suddenly mean more Linux ports

Quoting: silmethYeah, I suppose you're not wrong on that point.Quoting: liamdaweA different platform using Vulkan will not change our situation. Windows is a much bigger platform that exists right now and supported Vulkan day-1 just like we did. So far not much has changed there.Windows also have extremely popular D3D, so Vulkan on Windows won’t get traction all by itself. Something other than Windows must push gamedev industry into using it in DX’s stead. Until now this “it” was Android. Now Nintendo joins.

I am optimistic for Linux gaming as I always am, wouldn't be running GOL if I wasn't.
Like I said in the article this is good for Vulkan, I did specifically state that. This will hopefully help push it forward.

I just don't want people to get the wrong idea here. Unless something major changes for us specifically, we won't see much change in 2017 or even 2018 in regards to ports, even with Vulkan.

Quoting: NyamiouThis article is overly pessimistic.Being realistic and trying to keep everyone's hype in check is not being pessimistic. I do wish people would understand the difference. I am looking outside the box here and not giving into hyped up speculation about our future.

Market share is the key point that is almost always goes down to. Time and time again we see developers not doing ports due to it.
That's without getting into how completely different it is deploying HTML to Vulkan-powered games to each platform. Anyone should be able to see how those topics don't really mix together.

Quoting: ShmerlYes, lower barrier is a benefit. It doesn't mean more developers will start releasing for Linux because of market share. That's a completely orthogonal issue and there is no point to mix it into this topic. But, more developers can avoid various technical problems that could otherwise deter them from releasing for Linux, and there are easily demonstrable examples of that (Everspace, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and so on). It's pleasing to see you do at least understand and actually agree with me, which is weird considering your other replies (mostly on reddit).

Quoting: ShmerlWeb development is different, but the point of open standard is the same. WebGL is even more focused on this topic. Everyone supports it, so WebGL based application will work fine anywhere. Why does everyone support it? Because pressure on lock-in freaks (Apple, MS) was strong, and they budged and adopted open standards.Web development is an entirely different thing. The web is literally everywhere and can be easily accessed, Linux desktop gaming is completely different (again, market-share here).

Quoting: ShmerlWeb development is an entirely different beast and I'm sure you know that.Quoting: liamdaweIt's like saying that IE supporting HTML5 first, and then Edge supporting open codecs is a milestone development for MS only and not for the whole Web. That's incorrect. Same here. Every usually lock-in oriented vendor adopting Vulkan is a milestone.Quoting: ShmerlIt is a major milestone development. No point in downplaying it.For Nintendo, not for us.
Quoting: ShmerlYou are implying it here and on reddit like a lower barrier due to one API is going to mean more ports, it just won't.Quoting: liamdaweTo blindly say it will mean more Linux ports just because a barrier is lower, is dangerous to the hopes of the many.Again, no one said that, you seem to be arguing with your own counter arguments here.

I don't see the point in getting hopes up over a different platform using the Vulkan API, for all the stated reasons.
To blindly say it will mean more Linux ports just because a barrier is lower, is dangerous to the hopes of the many.
Unity, Unreal and CryEngine all support Linux, yet we are still battling with developers using them to bring out Linux builds. How many times have we heard lines along "Linux won't make enough money" or "Linux market-share is really small" and so on, this is the key point and no matter how people try to wash over that, the fact is that's the real issue we face.
This simply does not mean we will get more Linux ports, it means the barrier for Nintendo will be lower, not necessarily for us.

Quoting: scaineI ticked the box for sandboxing, now the client won't start. And since it doesn't start, I can't untick the option. I guess that feature isn't ready yet (although, if that's actually true, then why include it in the gui?).Be sure you report that, I have the sandbox enabled without issues.
Anyone know where the client keeps its config? Time for a wipe.

You made two rubbish games and got a rubbish review, it's time to get over it.
My comment in the PM about not giving up was not in any way sarcastic. Don't give up if you enjoy doing it, but learn to make better games.
Better games get better reviews. It's as simple as that, giving me free keys does not entitle you to a good review. I write honestly as I see it.
Play more well-received platformers, look at their mechanics and see just how much better they are. Take inspiration from them.
It's not blindly believing what I write, when you even confirmed to me literally right there that I am actually right. You said that twice about people blindly believing, when I was 100% correct about what I said.
Your whole comment and attitude is sad and almost childlike that you fail to see criticism for what it is. Criticism of your games is not an attack, stop acting like it is.

To make things worse, you broke all my arguments with pure luck. I tested the game before the DLC release on both OS, and checked that the achievements were working perfectly. After what you said, I checked it again of course, and they are indeed not working anymore after the updates in the Steam Client. Again, people here will blindly believe in YOU, not me. Even this issue being related to the engine I used to develop these games, and not being my fault. It's not luck if something breaks, it's a bug. However, to make a baseless claim that I haven't even played the game when I clearly have I won't put up with. Like you said, you have now gone back and tested yourself and I am correct, they are broken.

I really, really hope that after this incident, you become a better person, a better professional and a better reviewer.Grow up. Learn what criticism is and stop blaming me because you were wrong and chose to make baseless accusations against me apparently not playing it when I obviously did.

Quoting: minjI had my comment liked and the thread was replied to (both notifications lead to the same place, essentially)Well those are two completely different types of notifications.
I followed the reply notification but the like notification still remained unread.
Quoting: tuubiGreat stuff. The notification system is shaping up nicely.Yep, next on the list is notification priority, so then we can add in username tagging too.
I do think it's a bit unnecessary to get two notifications every time I'm quoted. One for the quote and another for the reply if I'm subscribed to the thread. (I usually am.)
Could you prevent the reply notification to any user who was quoted, as they've already been notified?
