Valve expects to sell 1 million Steam Controllers by early 2017, will allow configs for other controllers

Like with everything Valve, it's a slow but steady progress. Allow people to use their own accounts bindings when turning on a controller for co-op was a first good step.

Quoting: madmachinationsAnd it still has no support for other local players earning their own achievements even though the controller has been bound to their specific steam account.Yeah, that's a major difference between how Steam/SteamOS and traditional consoles work. I imagine there's a lot of back-end work that needs to be done to allow such things.

Steam VR will use Vulkan on Linux, demo shown off on Linux, new Vive controller being made

Quoting: bubexelYes, they just have to rebuild the game with the vr libraries and vulkan. If it's build on unity or unreal, will be pretty easy. But unity with vulkan is just experimental. It will take a while.Ah yeah good point, didn't even think about that. Since SteamVR will use Vulkan, of course all developers will need to publish new Linux builds.

Quoting: archmage24601Does this mean that any games with windows and Linux versions that support vive on windows will now also support it on Linux?Well, if the game already supports Linux then the answer is likely yes. As SteamVR is supposed to handle the input and all that for the developers. Don't quote me on that though, I'm new to all this VR stuff.

Edit: I've cleared it up a bit now anyway, to not confuse anyone or send this off-topic with debates on it :P

Quoting: GuestYeah, that's part of my point. I didn't want to go into too many details to make it too long-winded for this type of post since it isn't a big technical readout of it. It will help though, by how much is what's up for debate :PQuoting: minidouWell, it does help single thread performance. One of the issues with the previous architectures was that a single thread might use just enough resources to not allow something else to run. A single thread, on its own, it won't help. A single thread as part of a system with multiple threads all vying for their share of resources - yes, that it will help with. They have ditched their own "clustered multi-threading" (CMT) and gone with "simultaneous multi-threading" (SMT) which is what Intel use. This is one reason why AMD Zen will have much stronger single threaded performance, which will be especially good for us gamers. That's not the only thing that will improve single threaded performance, but a nice change.SMT doesn't improve single threaded performance, SMT is what allows a single core to run two threads at the same time with almost no cost, Intel implement it under the name Hyperthreading.
Zen looks to be a great, new, architecture, many things helping single threaded performance, and IPC, but that one isn't it.
The degree to which it will help remains open for debate, but I'll stay out of that one.

Quoting: chimpyOut of curiosity, would this be considered a Linux sale? Whenever you opt into one of these betas (for example Arma 3) do they count as Windows or Linux sales?Linux sale.

Quoting: GuestLast post on the official blog is from February 14th, and last game update was August. This opt-in beta is a bit confusing at first but I think I understand how it works now. I'll keep an eye on it but I'm not buying at this time. Most developers keep their news to Steam, as that's where their customers are.
