Updated the post to remove 32bit link since only the 64bit version is the new one, and changed the notice about the md5 sum.

I don't think anything is being overblown here.
This does smell like small scale DRM, altough it may have good intentions, it doesn't change what it is.

Enabling the higher resources in the options menu meant for SSD's does in fact make loading faster for me, even on a normal HDD.

I haven't tried it since I got a much beefier CPU to be fair, so it might be better for me now anyway.
