Serious question though, how does, or how much does a "WINE-based port" like this differ from running the native Windows version in WINE?

From what I gather, "ports" such as this come pre-packaged with a version of WINE that has been tested against the game (or is that visa versa?), and is known to run well. It also counts as a Linux sale.

Fortunately, I don't think they can legally pull that trick. Ever since the days of the Atari 2600 third party publishers were able (after an extensive legal battle), to produce unsanctioned games for Atari's machine. Microsoft may refuse to let you sell the game on their store unless it's exclusive, but I think that's the extent of their ability.

For me, this game was crashing immediately on startup. Running Steam from the terminal showed that it was looking for .dll files in a directory that didn't exist (steamapps/common/Firewatch/fw_Data/Managed/mono/2.0). I created the directory it wanted and copied the dll files from steamapps/common/Firewatch/fw_Data/Managed into it, which allowed the game to start. Probably could've done it with a symbolic link, but I was feeling lazy.

So my question is, was this game released or did it escape? This kind of stuff shouldn't happen, especially when it was so trivial to fix. I'm thinking there is no way this was tested on Linux before it shipped. The *directory structure* was borked, for goodness sake.

I haven't played further than the title screen, so I have no idea if there are any more mistakes screw-ups random features, but I'm going to give it a shot. Hopefully this was the only whoopsie-doodle. I'm also curious that Segata didn't mention any of this, so I can only assume it didn't happen for him. And upon reflection, that makes my experience even more puzzling.

Hey everybody,

I guess I'm just the guy who doesn't get it, so I'm reaching out to everyone on PoL to give me some perspective.

What is the appeal of these truck driving games? I was an OTR driver for 7 years all over the lower 48 states, and for the life of me I can't imagine why anyone would want to do this for fun. I'd rank it up there with (hopefully) non-existent titles such as "Factory Worker Simulator" or "McDonald's Lunchtime Rush".

Hate me if you want (and I mean this in all friendliness and good humor), but what the hell do you all see in games like this? Professional truckers everywhere want to know!

If he has legitimate complaints about the platform, let him state them openly so that we can either debunk or help resolve the issue. Other than that, just leave it; the market will sort him out, just like it did for Id Software.

Forgive my presumption, but it seems like you're trying to have things both ways. For my part, Garry's opinions and his statements of the same are the reason I don't buy his games. He has presented himself to me as someone with which I simply do not wish to do business. Said another way, his character is entirely the issue with what I assume to be quite a number of people.

I'm not for character assassination and infantile remarks taking the place of good argumentation. And while I haven't witnessed anyone here on GoL doing it, I wouldn't be surprised if someone of his dubious popularity in the Linux community drew some fire. However, his PR chops are lacking, and he suffers from foot-in-mouth disease. The reactions to the things he says about Linux simply are not unprovoked.

In summary, what you're seeing is precisely the market sorting him out (ditto for Team Meat).
