Opinion: Why We Want Native Ports Only
5 Jul 2015 at 4:25 pm UTC Likes: 2

Thanx for this post. I'm totally with you on this. Experience and Improvment can only come from using a OS not from avoiding by simply letting other do the work or in terms of wrapper not even understanding the new tech.

That doesn't mean i dislike eON or Crossover, these guys are very skilled very knowledgable and there is a place. There are thousands of windows games which are already programmed and noone would redo them, but please don't port new tittles. It just hurts OpenGL (i would rather state Vulcan at this point) and linux gaming in the long term.

I already decided for example that i won't buy TW3 if not ported native and i'm so fucking keen on playing that game.

Thats why icculus and i do to suggest checking out cmake. Basically instead of telling i want for example /usr/include/SDL2/SDL2.h you just say cmake that you need SDL2 , OpenGL headers and libs. Here a smal example how it kinda looks to make it understandable how easy it is: http://sprunge.us/ghbX [External Link]

The next step is that cmake makes a build file for your dev platform. So cmake on windows can create nmake files or mingw-makefiles or so on. Thats than what you can compile with your build enviroment.

Since every refresh of the cmake cache searches again for the dependencies you don't realy have to know where the files are as long as they are installed. Of course if you want specific settings cmake lets you override everything even depending on the platform but defaults to good system defaults.

So for example if you tell cmake to use a 32bit compiler it will search in /usr/lib32 or /lib32 for the files. If you tell cmake to use a 64bit compiler it will search on /usr/lib64 or /lib64 and so on.

That way you basically can also very fast switch between compilers. For example:
mkdir build
cd build
CC=/usr/bin/clang CXX=/usr/bin/clang++ cmake -D_CMAKE_TOOLCHAIN_PREFIX=llvm- -G "Sublime Text 2 - Unix Makefiles" ..

creates unix makefiles (make) and a sublime project file :) very nice i tell you

if you only do
cmake -G "Sublime Text 2 - Unix Makefiles" ..
it will use the default c/c++ compiler in your development enviroment

In the first place linux look very strange to develop on but once you start using ...

apt-get install thisspeciallibrary-dev thisspeciallibrary thisspeciallibrary:i386

and basically everything is in place afterwards you don't drop a tear for this msi / exe packages on windows :) At least it was for me that way.

Microsoft btw notice that too thats why c# have its nuget + dnwm enviroment. So comftable :P a json.file with the dependencies and they are downloaded using dnwm/nuget :)

Maybe i'm allowed to give some hints to check.

1.) http://nothingtocode.blogspot.de/2013/07/setting-up-sdl2-in-ubuntu-linux-mint-debian.html [External Link] << this is a very easy example of how you install all needed headers for SDL2

2.) The first only installs the SDL2 headers. You might want to add the OpenGL development files / glew development files and openal development files too

3.) What you want for crossplatform development is a different build system than visual studios nmake. I highly suggest cmake. If the development enviroment is set correctly cmake searches for the right pathes and includes the right files on windows / linux and mac osx.

4.) A nice ide supporting cmake + c/c++? If you ask me i would highly suggest you take a look on clion https://www.jetbrains.com/clion/ [External Link] . I'm totally honest here i suggest this with totally knowing it cost money. There are many alternatives around but this seems so far give the best overall experience on all systems (personal opinion at least in what you plan to do).

The following are maybe alternatives:
- qtcreator
- eclipse + cdt
- https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/products/code-vs.aspx [External Link] (keep an eye on it , c++ other language support is highly requested)

I hope this helped a little.

Arma 3 Is Officially Being Worked On For Linux By An External Team, Won’t Be Native

Nope vsync is off and my system isn't messed up. Just saying shadow warrior goes easy up to 90+ fps with all the fancies.

It's just easy ... VP EON + AMD CPU (Phenom II 1090T) ...

Welcome to why emulating windows is a bad idea....

:( sorry i'm here with a big nope :(
None of the eOn ports performance well compared to native windows version. TheWitcher2 while playable still has drop downs below 30fps in some scenes. Bioshock Infinite is instable without workaround (eg: removing all frequency changeing) and is hovering at 60fps and below. While this is certainly playable this is not what my rig is capable of. If i check the cpu usage as a diagram none of my cores is fully used and my gtx 970 can't be the bottleneck @ 1080p.

Bioschock infinite after crashing is even able to hardlock my pc. With rt patch i wasn't able to ps -afx to find the process id. That means that they have putten threads on a nice level where they don't belong and risking the stability of the system.

Sorry while i give kudos for VP getting EON at least in a playable status im not in any way happy with their ports. Neither The Witcher 2 nor Bioschock Infinite. Will i spend money for ARMA 3 or DayZ (based on the same engine) if it is ported by EON? Nope.

If they want to monetise their work they should make 3rd party dlc and give modders the ability to create such conntent.

Abusing calling it a mod to reduce customer protection is not something i can support.

If a modder wanna start a business with his work he is free to do so. But than under the useall rules. With proper refund rules / with the customer having the right to have a working product / with the author being fully responsible in terms of following the law.

So mod's should stay free and valve should provide a donate button do compensate modders for their work.
If someone wants to make money out of it, give him the possibility to make a dlc.

All problems fixed. But yeah that means suddenly valve and bethesda realy need to change ... which won't happen.

So nope there is no logical reason to support and even praise what valve is doing right now.

Larian Studios Detail Why The Linux Port Of Divinity Is Taking So Damn Long

Quoting: MaelraneDon't get me wrong, I appreciate any efforts taking to supporting Linux and I know how in software-development something always goes wrong ...
...
If I pledge toward a certain level and it gets reached I assume (naive boy that I am) that you will deliver before the end of time.
I'm a bit confused. What do you suggest they should have done?
In my opinion they should had done the same like for example obsidian or inXile Entertainment -> developing and testing the product on all three platforms. So easy and yet so hard. But they failed on planning resources ... first the mac port which came later and instead doing it right there ... nope another round of wait for the linux guys.

And it's not that they didn't had the resources after the initial start of the game. The game sold fantastic.

Honestly puting us again on hold won't let me ever support them again.
Yes i'm pissed and yes it's not the right, but <insert bad words here> ... i wanted to play this game with friends (which are on windows) and the multiplayer is a main part of the game. Chance gone ....

Nothing more to say without <add more rant from a disapointed backer here>....

Added later:
Games like D: OS / Banner Saga with industry veterans which should know what they do, which should know how to check if hey can offer their game one a specific platform or not (and it's in both cases a none compatible middelware) made me step away from kickstarter. If i can't trust them to treat their backers like they would like to be treated when they are in the same situation, how should i ever trust someone who has never released a game before or is very very ambitious with their goals?
It's sad that those games who got the chance destroyed it for many others.

Why Are We Still Dual Booting?
12 Mar 2015 at 8:59 pm UTC

Ok i boot windows only for 1 reason.
serato dj + ddj sx.

While my ddj sx is supported in midi mode (sub optimal) , there is no real alternative to tracktor pro or serato dj on linux. The only free software mixxx doesn't support 4 decks and don't have a mapping for the ddj sx (maybe with the new version ..). Also besides mixxx is a good software it's still not at a level of traktor pro or serato dj. Also to make a linux djing system you want jack instead of pulseaudio ... which is a task in itself.

Beside that i don't realy game on windows anymore , but if i could vote for games i would like to see on linux:
- skyrim or fallout3 (one of the current bethesda rpg's) -> TW3 maybe is a alternative
- Path of Exile (maybe the only game i realy play regulary in wine) -> TL2 will maybe fit in for a while but it won't solve that i miss PoE
- The Secret World (maybe the only mmorpg i'm realy interested to go into lore)
- Deadly Premonition

Of course there is a huge selection of other games i would like to play native but the above 4 are the once i realy like. I hoped for Blizzard to have another oppinion Diablo 3 was something i would buy if it appears to run native on linux but with this respond i'm not willing to spend money for them.

Did you try the beta that is still available? Don't know why they are still offering a beta though...
