Only two native titles in this whole list, can't help feeling like that's a sad sign of the times today.

Quoting: PyrateOnline and fighting games is an oxymoron.
It's been almost 20 years since the original GGPO came out. And while it took some time for certain publishers to catch up, literally every new game released today has proper rollback now.

Fighting games are made to be played with other people, and while the FGC moves heaven and earth to make sure we still have offline events to attend, it's important to have a way to practice at home against real opponents.

Surprised this is the one time Skullgirls somehow isn't on sale, so I guess I can't shill it today. Though who doesn't own it by now, really?

Them's Fightin' Herds [External Link] is 70% off and is still a wonderful game that's worth playing even after the studio shutdown. Just don't buy the season pass, buy Texas and Stronghoof individually if you want them.

If you want something a little more out there, Mega Knockdown [External Link] is 20% off and just got a new updated demo. It's a very fun take on a turn-based fighting game, highly recommend it.

EDIT: Forgot about FOOTSIES [External Link] (25% off), a minimalist one-button game. Cute little party game to try and hook your non-FGC friends into.

Sadly that's kind of it as far as native titles worth talking about go. This genre is sadly underrepresented on Linux.

Will anything dethrone the Steam Deck? Probably not

No one can challenge Valve's brand recognition, and I don't think anyone else will even try to manufacture at the same scale. But other devices don't need to 'dethrone' the Steam Deck, they just have to capture their own niche by offering something the Deck doesn't.

I picked up a Miyoo Mini Plus on sale last year purely as an impulse buy, and I ended up spending far more time with it than I ever did with my Deck. My dream is to one day see SteamOS in a similar form factor, something that actually fits in my pocket and can just run my favorite low spec 2D indie games.

With a Nintendo Switch 2 on the way, I hope Valve make a Steam Deck 2

Rather than a beefier Steam Deck 2, my dream is for a smaller Steam Deck Pocket. As in, actually fits in my pocket.

I bought a Miyoo Mini Plus last year and I've put far more hours into it than I ever did my Deck, because I just like the form factor so much more. Give me SteamOS at this size.

Obviously I wouldn't expect much in the way of power, but if it runs my favorite 2D indie games I'll be happy.

For a little more background, a group of fans were working on an engine reimplementation from scratch with the goal of more advanced modding support and online multiplayer. Brace Yourself Games ended up hiring them to make that rewrite into the official game + Synchrony DLC.

Skullgirls got review-bombed on Steam after some art changes

Quoting: TejanIf you want to get more into it though some of the stuff that was removed/altered were incentives from the IndieGoGo. Stuff like the voice packs for Big Band and Peacock, the artbook, some color palettes, and my personal biggest issue the fan art (People donated to get their art in the game and it was all just removed without reaching out to ask them to edit it to comply with their rules.).
This is incorrect. Big Band and Peacock's voice packs are still in the game, as are all color palettes. None of the gallery fanart came from backers either, no one paid to have their art included. I have no idea where you're getting any of this from.

The only change that did come from the IndieGoGo is the removal of Mike Z's Soviet Announcer voice, because it's Mike Z. Note that it's missing lines for all the new characters and they can't get him to record new ones, so it was kind of inevitable to have to leave it behind.

Don't sleep on Them's Fightin' Herds. One of the absolute best fighting games out there, and it's native.
