I've been wanting this for some time but was put off by reports of poor performance. I'm still considering it though.

This game suffers from a fullscreen bug on Windows that they decided to never fix. I wonder if Feral will fix that for Linux. This game is also one of the few I've seen that supports dual monitors. You can have your race on one screen and race information on the other.
Rocket League should be on Linux before the end of December

Quoting: maodzedunI obviously can't speak for the "vast majority", but I have a 970, and I notice the difference too. When a game should be able to get a steady 60+ FPS and it's dipping into the 40s, I definitely notice. I don't get why we shouldn't hold developers to high standards just because we're using Linux. That's a like a beautiful desperate woman settling for an old drunk guy who hits her because she's so afraid he'll leave. She deserves better, and so do we. ^_^Quoting: omer666When you know that the vast majority of them wouldn't even spot the difference between the port and the original without an FPS counter...Except for all people with lower and or older hardware. Why are all deniers acting like everybody has a 970 or better GPU. I've a pair of 290x - trust me, I notice the performance difference quite well. I'm pretty sure anybody with a 2 gig 960 would be like WTF when his game starts running at 40 instead of 60+ frames.

It's running on Unreal Engine 3, and the current state of that engine on Linux is a hodgepodge of third-party hacks rather than a true port. My hope is that the extra time they're taking is to whip the engine into shape and optimize it for Linux.

I reckon those people who desire to play some Windows games will stream them from their desktops, since that was one of the big selling points Valve has emphasized about Steam Machines. I'm pretty sure most people know what they're getting when they buy one.
Rocket League Linux port is being worked on still, developers are listening

Quoting: KallestofelesAnd if he can hear the cries of the guy working on it, then it must be an in-house port as well.Quoting: linuxgamerToo bad. I really want to play that game. But the longer it takes the better it will be optimized, or?I believe it'll be just fine. Given that the game runs constant 60fps while maxed out in Wine 1.7.55, I seriously doubt that the native port would have worse performance. :P

We all know third-party ports of DirectX games to OpenGL are going to have decreased performance. This has been true in every port I've seen. It might be different when it comes to porting DirectX 12 to Vulkan, but the ultimate goal, I would think, would be to have games developed with Linux in mind from the beginning. Games like that always perform very well.

I'm sure half the PR people who make these announcements don't even know what Linux and SteamOS are. They're just posting the information given to them. But how does communication break down so badly that they end up with the false information in the first place. If the company truly has no intention of porting to Linux, who fed the PR person that information and why?
In the case of the Witcher 3, it's an even bigger goof up. They posted a huge banner with the Witcher 3 and SteamOS. I saved it as proof. It's on my computer and my server. How can someone be that misinformed about reality? The simple answer would be: they're not - they just jumped the gun, and both games will see Linux versions. A more complex explanation might be a frightening look into very disorganized and confused companies.

Two things:
It's interesting that no one has mentioned the elephant in the room: Virtual Programming. Despite being a "wrapper", their eON system is now getting excellent performance on DirectX games. Perhaps that may be the best route for developers who aren't going to begin with native OpenGL code when they start making a game.
As for those developers who do start with OpenGL, the performance seems to be great. When developers don't rely on third-party porters, their games run very well on Linux. I'm talking about games like Victor Vran and Magicka 2.

I think we are looking at it from the inside out rather than how the rest of the world sees it. To us, SteamOS launched with now "new" launch titles. To the rest of the world, it had 1500+ launch titles, more than any console ever had at launch. Having said that, Rocket League is the one game that should have been ready since they did promise it during preordering.
On an unrelated note, I'm starting to think the people who complained about Steam Controllers were just whining because they like to whine or were trolls. It didn't have as steep of a learning curve for me as it seems to have for many people. It just took me an hour or so to get the hang of it. My 8-year-old daughter picked it up and knew what to do with it almost instantly. Granted I'm not playing some competitive FPS online, but the controller wasn't really made for those anyway.
