AMD next-gen Zen 3 due this year, Zen 4 will be 5nm and new RDNA 2-based GPUs coming

Quoting: GuestSince RDNA2 will support Ray Tracing does that mean we can use it in games like Quake 2 RTX or Metro Exodus or would those games need to be patched to work with AMD?
Good question, considering Nvidia did the work.

A new Steam Client Beta is up, fixing some annoyances for Linux users

I figure password rotation is a good thing, so for sites you don't use often, just forget the password, forced rotation. :p

I never have ran into issues with Steam and the keyring and I use Debian Unstable with Gnome. I have had windows randomly ask for the password, which is annoying.

Speculation: porting studio Feral Interactive could be in some trouble (updated: they're fine)

Quoting: JJNovaI'm actually disappointed that they aren't in trouble. If they were in a situation, maybe they would sell their games somewhere other than Steam.
What a ridiculous thing to say!
*shrugs*

They currently aren't making any games for people that prefer their privacy to playing games. Seems weird to think that them distributing on more platforms would be bad for consumers.
*face plams*

Regardless of where you want to buy games from is no reason to wish/say such things about any firm/devs ect. You've basically ssaid you want people to lose there jobs just so you can buy "x" game on another store.

As stated by others, 99% of the time it's not ferrals decision to make. Which in turns makes the statement you make even more ridiculous due to your lack of knowledge of porting/licencing games/software/propriety IP.

And please, stop with the BS "Privacy" rhetoric.
Huh, first time I have heard of DRM particularly in the light of privacy concerns, especially Steam's. Usually it is in the case of wanting to actually own your software.
If you have privacy concerns over Steam, which you can use aliases, and even your account name != username, then you should probably stop using the Internet, or cell phones, or going outside your house.
I am very paranoid about such things myself, but still Steam is one of the more trustworthy plarforms out there.
I respect people who would prefer to buy their stuff on GOG, so they can archive the files themselves, but oh, you can basically do that with Steam too and play in offline mode...
Sure, some DRM on Steam is crappy, but pretty sure Feral's is less so. Also, since they are a porting house, they have to follow what their contract is with the original publisher, and I bet they are against non-Steam releases.

Quoting: EhvisLooks like they've been so busy cleaning up SteamVR before the HL:Alyx release, that they didn't do anything for Linux this time.
Then again, they said more than a month ago that HL:Alyx is basically done and in an extremely good shape (which has to include SteamVR obviously).
Doesn't sound like crunch-time panic to me. :)

That's why I had some hope, they could find the time to wire up Linux (and Mac).
But I guess that is sadly out of question now.
It would be hilarious if they just came out and said everyone would have to switch to Linux to play it. Just to see how many actually would. I mean if there were a game franchise that would make people switch to both VR and Linux, it would be this one.

Quoting: PatolaI do really really hope we don't lose Feral. Maybe buying more stuff from them would help, even though we're a tiny demographic.
Just bought the new Tomb Raider and LiS 2 full price from their store. :)

Feral leaving would be the day I'm installing Windows 10. Because there's no better suited system to start Exe files.
Funny thing, I recently bought Campaign Cartographer 3 plus. It runs terribly on Windows 10, runs much faster under Wine 5.0 (as packaged in Debian Unstable.)
Then again, it also hasn't been updated to 64bit either.

Give it a while longer, they will get cheaper. More and more "budget" headset will arrive.
And maybe valve will sell of there index or make a cheaper version, vr are still a new cool thing.
And The vive cosmos just got a cheaper headset called vive cosmos play, and its alot cheaper then the original cosmos.
The problem is with linux we barely have scopes and no competition. At the time I was hoping that dell would pass his vr to linux but it was nil.
Also from what I understand cosmo is only compatible with w10.
The problem is that we were left out of vr linux.
The Index and Vive both work fine on Linux. Oculus had Linux support until Facebook bought them from what I understand.

I disagree - I have PlayStation VR and for a "cheap" virtual reality headset, it's pretty good (yes I have compared it to the HTC Vive Pro - I work in a family entertainment center and we use them in a commercial context).

In all honesty, the only problem with my PlayStation VR is that the resolution is "just" 1080p and unlike the Vive Pros, I find that I get motion sickness / headaches pretty easily, which by my understanding, is mostly due to the refresh rate of the headset... That's a very minor point to address in a future product.

Okay, PlayStation VR is designed to run only on Sony "PlayStation 4" products - but it's still a virtual reality headset competing for the same space, so I guess it's a step in the right direction...

I'm actually surprised no one has managed to get PlayStation VR working under Linux-based operating systems yet - aside from the fact that the "PlayStation 4" products run a FreeBSD-based operating system (which in many ways is very similar to other "'nix" based operating systems), it actually uses "standard" connections (USB and HDMI).

Interesting side note, PlayStation VR works as a giant screen - without the "virtual reality" part - under Linux-based operating systems "out-of-the-box" (like every good geek, this was the first thing I tried when I bought my PlayStation VR)!
PSVR isn't the cheap ones I was referring to. I was talking about the sub-100 dollar ones you put your Phones into. Ha, I literally bought my PSVR to watch 3D Movies on because it is supported right out of the box and you have to do janky things on the PC to get them to work.
The Valve Index at 120hz is what it sounds like you need.

Edit: I watched the full talk by one of the hackers that got Linux working on the PS4. He said it is very not-PC, as it is missing a lot of architecture bits that are assumed to be present on a PC. I thought there was a special connwction that goes from the PSVR box to the PS4, but not sure, I would have to look at mine. But still, PSVR is still kind of crap compared to the Vive and beyond.

The problem is that budget headsets (especially the crappy phone ones) give VR a terrible reputation. Even going for the original Vive now would probably drive me nuts.

I did a test between the Index and the Vive Pro, and have to say that while the Vive pro is great for its rich blacks. I think Valve made the right move to LCD because you can definitely tell the text is clearer, even though they are the same resolution.

Hopefully the continued competition drives the prices down more.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI could never really play the descent games as they used to make me hurl. Really wanted to dive into foresaken as well, but same issue. But now I am a bit better with VR and Elite, so surely I should be able to handle Descent now...
And once you can handle those, continue with Overload. It is absolutely worth training hard for it :woot:
Yeah! I actually to play that one. Though now I can't remember if it was that one or the other semi-recent Descent style game that I backed on kickstarter, then haven't had time to play...
