I can only imagine that whatever Ethan works on will be a great success. We have been so lucky to have amazing dedicated devs working on linux gaming lately. I hope Ethan finds Wine/Proton coding rewarding!

(Whatever happened to Aaron from Knockout Games? Haven't seen much from him lately.)

Smith and Winston, a metroidvania-styled twin-stick shooter in a voxel world has Linux support

This looks quite interesting.
Unlike a lot of games, they're not sticking in random generation. I like that, because so many games have now moved towards random generation that they can end up feeling a lot less personal, hopefully with the hands-on approach to world building the developer will be able to make it stay interesting.
Yay! Hand-crafted sounds great to me.

The combat can be a challenge since you only have limited lives and no health bar, if you're hit you go down and you have to respawn.
Wait. What does this mean? Respawn at the very beginning of the game? If so, no thanks. That isn't a metroidvania...

If it is just at a checkpoint, that sounds fine. Lots of games are "hard but fair" without sending you back to the beginning.

Thanks for the review. I picked it up a while back and played a bit, but never got back to it. Definitely time to go back...

Wow. That looks pretty good!

(However, I hate to say that forcing 4:3 screen ratio is just silly.)

Mana Spark, a challenging action RPG released recently with Linux support and it's pretty good

Hi Liam,

Thanks for all the reviews you do - the volume is pretty impressive. I have a small request: Could you could add "rogue-like" (or rogue-something) to your tags for games like this, so that I don't have to dig through the text to find it?

Cheers!

Valve have released some interesting statistics about controller use
27 Sep 2018 at 4:06 am UTC

I have a couple old PS2 controllers I used to like using for platformers. Steam kept losing the settings and games kept wanting a 360 pad. Has the new controller system fixed that? I would love to use them again.

I also have a 360 controller. Decent and solid.

I love my Steam Controller. I have ranted before, but here is my pro-con list:

+ I love the right thumbpad for 1st person games.
+ The underside triggers are awesome.
+ The customization is excellent.
+ The gyro can be really good for fine tuning aim.

- The left thumb pad is worse than useless. Give me a D-pad dammit.
- The haptic was intolerable. I was ecstatic when they gave me a universal off switch.
- The button positions and springs are a little imbalanced, but I got used to them.

Overall, it is still brilliant, but could be even better. I stopped using my 360 controller, but might plug in the PS2 for the D-pad and see if it works again.

Timespinner, a polished and fun metroidvania, is now available

Thanks for the review, BTRE!

It doesn’t push any envelopes when it comes to innovation but that’s fine for the most part. But that’s fine.
You have a little redundant edit there.

The metroidvania formula doesn’t really lend itself to too much experimentation in the first place.
I love a good traditional metroidvania, but I would have to argue that a number of recent games experiment quite a bit.

Timespinner gets a clear and strong recommendation for lovers of metroidvanias.
Good to hear!

Hmmm. Looks like my copy of this is on GOG rather than Steam. I hope the remaster gets there eventually.
