Steam Survey for July 2025 shows Linux approaching 3%

For anyone wondering, Ubuntu Core means they installed steam with snap. In theory like Flatpak it could be any distribution but I expect 100% of these are ubuntu users that don't know better. (snap is not the recommended way).
So, what would be the "recommended way"? I'm on Ubuntu and have Steam running as snap with no problems whatsoever (at least on par with my previous deb-installer-package). However it avoids all the i386 dependencies drawn in by the latter installation method.

And what's this condescending "Ubuntu users that don't know better"? I have been on a Linux desktops for 17 years now (which is actually longer than all the years spent on any Windows) - I'm pretty sure I know my way around in the Linux world.

As a footnote.. RUSSIA is growing at 4.3% - those sanctions are really working aren't they?
Yes they are. Since we never sanctioned their domestic weapons production. And that's what they do.

Congratulations. I started using Linux on a regular basis about 17 years ago (with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron) and boy has the gaming landscape for Linux changed over the years... I can still remember when I bought Humble Bundles just to have anything to play on the platform.

Fun fact: I got the survey twice yesterday. First on my laptop, then on my desktop. I suppose Linux market share gonna blow up in July...

Ugh. Telemetry driven development is the bane of my computing life. It insidiously causes some devs to use it as a substitute for actual thinking instead of as a support.
No it isn't. Because otherwise I'd be still developing Internet Explorer-compatible web applications...

GOG now ask for donations when you buy games

It's hard to justify donating extra to GOG when they are almost as bad as Steam.
What am I missing? In what way has GoG (or CD Project) contributed anything to the Linux world? How does this stack up against the contributions of Valve (which suppose you mean by "Steam")?

(And I don't care whether Valve's contributions are driven by selfishness - it's the result that counts.)

Should I care? According to the ratings it seems to be a pretty mediocre title.

@Scaine

Couldn't agree more with you. When it comes to Snap about half of the Linux world is into running its own backend store. You forgot to mention that we trust the deb packages published by the very same company which apparently runs a completely untrustworthy proprietary Snap store...

Grab some great stuff for Steam Deck / Linux from Prime Gaming for April 17th

Does anyone really trust Amazon as a digital content store?
Why should I care? I don't pay for it anyway. It's not as if I have my Prime membership for their games and if they take it away they could refund exactly zero Euros. I suppose if I am genuinely interested in a game I'd most likely buy it on Steam.
And "buying isn't owning" applies to ALL (online) game purchases.

As Epic Games continue ignoring Linux / Steam Deck for Fortnite they're putting it on Windows Arm

To be honest, I prefer buying games on Epic Games now. Steam is the only proprietary user space application I use and I'd definitely like to get rid of it. With Epic Games, I don't have that problem at all. I can simply download and play via Minigalaxy, legendary or HGL for example.
Interesting. And the games you bought on Epic and which are running on your machine are not proprietary user space applications?

Seriously, this must be the most awkward "justification" I've heard in a long time. To sum it up: You are running Linux because you are oh so deeply into this open source philosophy and therefore despise the company which frequently and substantially fosters your open source ecosystem BUT shop instead on a company's store who openly fights your open source operating system. What puts the cherry on the cake is of course that Valve is the main reason why you can actually play your Epic-obtained Windows games on your open source OS.

Did I get that right?
