Playing Doom 3 on Linux in 2017
31 Oct 2017 at 8:19 am UTC

I never had a machine capable of playing the original game, so haven't experienced it in all its dark glory. I've been playing the GOG version with rbdoom-3-bfg and have been enjoying it. So far, I've had no bugs or graphical issues with the proprietary nvidia blob. Even if it isn't the definitive edition, it is entertaining enough to be worth a purchase.

The Untold Legacy, a story-rich action adventure game is on Kickstarter with Linux support

It looks very pretty. I'd love to see a decent Zelda clone. But the trailer makes the gameplay look a bit ponderous and the music is rather depressing. I'll wait until we have a Linux release and a couple of reviews, I think. I'm crossing my fingers.

The developers of Solus are hoping to improve Linux gaming with snaps and their Linux Steam Integration

For everyone who doubts why we need a Steam snap, please remember:

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/4768 [External Link] - a longstanding ABI incompatibility with Mesa

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/3671 [External Link] - a badly written Steam shell script could delete everything in the home directory

A combination of ikey's core snap and a carefully confined Steam snap could prevent similar problems in the future.

Things are changing all the time in the snap world. From my understanding, all "application" snaps to date have had a dependency on the Ubuntu Core snap, which provides almost a mini Ubuntu distro with all the needed runtime elements. The plan is for other distros to be able to provide alternative core snaps to ship their own runtimes. As I understand it, this is ikey's attempt to ship a suitable runtime environment for Steam and other gaming platforms. They'll be the "application" snaps and will depend on ikey's core snap. So all distros which support snaps will get to benefit from the work done in Solus to get gaming running smoothly. This is A Good Thing.

What have you been playing and what do you think?

Quoting: adamhmIn my experience Fallout: New Vegas runs great in Wine, or at least the GOG version does (I even made a wrapper [External Link] for it).
Heh. I was just about to recommend your wrapper!

Battle Chasers: Nightwar has silently removed mentions of Linux support a few hours before release (updated)

Quoting: ZlopezBut it at least helps to make some games come true. For a small team it is really a kickstart for they project.
But I know that some studios are using the kickstarter only as a statistic to see how much this particular game is wanted and if they should spend any time and resources to make it. Which is bad.
Yes, but that's exactly the same as a preorder: the company gets cash for development and a better idea about the potential return on investment, allowing them to make business decisions. Calling it investment is disingenuous.

Quoting: GuppyKickstarter is NOT a pre-order! it's crowd sourced investment/venture capital - and sometime your investment returns no yield. Basically do not spend money on a kickstarter unless you accept that they may be lost with no reward to you.
Erm, I hate to break it to you, but Kickstarter has nothing to do with investment. "Backers" do not get shares in the company or profits. It is only a preorder mechanism disguised as an investment to circumvent expectations of a guaranteed product at the end of the process. It is preordering made worse.

Looks great, and nice to see the assets have been created in blender.

I've emailed the developers to see whether they are going to release this on GOG. I'll report back if I hear anything.

F1 2017 could be on the way to Linux, as Feral Interactive want to see demand for it
18 Aug 2017 at 3:32 pm UTC

I'd love to play this game on Linux. The minimum specs would need to be quite low for me to run it, though. My machine could just about manage F1 2014 when I had a Windows partition. I didn't buy 2015 as it was a horrible iteration.

I would imagine the population of f1-loving Linux gamers is very small indeed, and some of us can't run AAA spec games. I will buy it if there's a chance I can run it, or in the future when I upgrade my hardware.
