Valve dumped Debian Linux for Arch Linux with SteamOS 3 because surprise - faster updates

Quoting: nobody_importantIf that's the case, how come they didn't decide to use Debian Testing instead?

Debian Testing also stops when main Debian freezes for a new release. If they were to use a Debian flavour, probably sid (unstable) would have been better. However, based on my experience until I moved to fedora, Debian unstable was very low on the uptake of linux-nonfree-firmware as well as Mesa. Let's also not forget that Debian did not have an AUR until recently, and that historically Debian devs are stricter about what goes into their repos.

Personally, I would have liked a rpm based distro for SteamOS 3.0 but, at the end of the day, I also hope that much tinkering won't be required on the device, so it doesn't really matter.

I thought exactly the same thing watching the trailer. Perhaps it's just because it's so early?

Very much hope so :)

I used that Anker for a while, and it was pretty comfy and nice. Although, mainly due to gaming, I ended up with a logitech MX Master 3 a few months after that, and never went back.

Quoting: TheRiddickI'm only interested in Vampire the Masquerade 2..

Which doesn't look seem like is making good progress...

Quoting: WikipediaInitially scheduled for release in March 2020, the game was pushed back in late 2019 to an unspecified 2020 release date,[49] and further delayed in late 2020 to an unspecified 2021 release date.[51] In November 2020, Paradox CEO Ebba Ljungerud speculated that Bloodlines 2 would not be released in the first half of 2021. She explained the delay as caused by the staff changes, the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, and a delay in receiving development kits for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.[52] Along with the developer change in February 2021, the game was also delayed to past 2021

The Valve Steam Deck, lots of excitement and plenty to think about for Linux gaming

Quoting: dubigrasuI hope they'll put up also a polished installer for the new SteamOS 3.0.

I can easily imagine that many will just strip SteamOS out of it and install Windows, but at the same time others might be impressed with SteamOS and tempted to install on their PC.

Why would they? Most Windows users never ever install an OS at all - that's something for the Linux crowd. In addition setting up Windows on such a fully integrated device is far from "super easy, barely an inconvenience" while OTOH you already have a shiny nice frontend running which serves the purpose perfectly. After all we are talking about a console.
I explained why a couple of posts below but suffice to say that it will happen. Already media is buzzing about "runs Linux but don't worry, you can easily install Windows on it" and is not so far fetched to believe that gamers in search of performance and a greater gaming library will go this route.
I didn't said "most" or "everyone", I said "many" which is very likely a possibility.

Edit: stupid grammar. Man, I hate this.

The fact that other stores, games and OSes can be installed on the Deck doesn't mean they will be supported, though. Considering the APU is custom built, and the effort they've put into Proton + device, it would be clever to assure support on it only for the OS they developed for it.

It can go both ways, only time will say, but it's an exciting move that can bring lots of good things; From games targeted specifically to Linux, to games made with the Deck in mind. Games being optimized for it, would mean all laptops/computers get to benefit from it, more creativity due to the button disposition and hardware constraints, less money invested in games because I don't need to buy one game twice (home PC, travelling for the Switch), etc

Let's dream :)

Valve has formally announced the Steam Deck, a portable handheld console with SteamOS

Something I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is the dock. Will it be included? Will it have hardware on its own to increase performance/fps dramatically or just more power to effectively overclock it like the Switch does?
