Steam's top releases of May show why Steam Play is needed for Linux

Some people seem to think that games are what would make a person dive into GNU/Linux. Or what's even more weird - stop somebody from doing it.

Thouse people seem to forget what GNU/Linux actually is.

Anyway, I'm more concerned with Steam being the only store selling Feral games. It puts me in the possition to rely on third-party services for playing the games.

Canonical have released a statement on Ubuntu and 32bit support, will keep select packages

The saga continues…

Spoiler alert: The end of the world is not happening today. The mankind should rejoice!

Honestly it's actually quite amusing.

Quoting: GustyGhostThe problem is not 100% Canonical's decision. Consider also Valve's failure to build Steam for amd64, and the games industry (in general).
To be fair most new games (at least in the AAA category) have 64bit or are 64bit only, in some cases out of necessity.

As a person, who uses Ubuntu, Debian, and Arch I agree.
But how do you explain ex. Windows user that to get fresh Nvidia driver and kernel to work with Ryzen he has to open a terminal and type:
sudo echo "deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian stretch-backports main contrib non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -t stretch-backports linux-image-4.19.0-0.bpo.5-amd64
#do you update it manually every time or is there a meta package?
sudo apt install -t stretch-backports linux-headers-4.19.0-0.bpo.5-amd64
sudo apt install -t stretch-backports nvidia-driver

Debian is not my main distro and I would be glad if you can correct me and there is GUI way to do this.
I wouldn't. I would point him at Windows.
If he was so keen on going GNU/Linux then I would point him to something a bit more like Linux. And then point him at the gigantic amount of text that was written over the years.

Ha-Ha-Ha! Let the drama begin… *Grabs a popcorn and sits on his desk*

Jokes aside or am I joking at all?
I installed Windows a few weeks back (that solved all Linux related gaming problems one could have - in a instant).

Given the "it's just a little space lost" argument I hear so much lately, it's definitely the best solution.

Until Feral decides to give alternative stores a go (I'm looking at GOG even though I don't really like them, but atleast they are usable), I'm giving them a pass.

If Feral wasn't a Steam exclusive, they would not be a hurt by a move like that at all. Or am I missing any 32bit-only game from Feral?

I have one and only question: But does Witcher 3 get performance like on Windows?

Quoting: Eike
Quoting: sbolokanovThe only thing that's stopping me from enjoying Feral's work is the fact that Steam is 32bit-only.
No matter what they improve the fact will remain…
What's the problem with that?
It's not a problem, per se, rather a reason not to care for any improvements on Steam's part and skip (or find alternatives, piracy exists after all) anything that require it.

A pure 64bit system over here. And I hope you can accept my unwillingness to bloat my system (performance wise, and other effects also) for that one tool.

Quoting: HoriI don't think they want anything to do with Linux again.
AFAIK they received threats when Witcher 3 took too long to port + they were mad with Witcher 2's performance (and the fact it was Wine-wrapped, not native), and it got so ugly that they canceled it altogether.
They basically hate us now. Just beause some loud mouths couldn't accept the fact that we're such a small market that a lot of the stuff we get is basically charity, and they went to demand things like some kind of kings or something.
Stupidity of threats aside, that's not how businesses operate. It's not some kind of tantrum driven decision making. They got massively bigger amount of outrage from Windows gamers about so called "downgrade". Do you expect them to stop releasing for Windows now? So, view them as objective enough, but may be clueless and in need of convincing about the Linux market.
I would expect them to stop! That is if I were to fall for their "reasons" (well at least according to some users)…

Always amused me how some ppl seem to think that it cannot be other than Linux or Linux people sucking.
I give it to a lack of self-esteem or outright blatant ignorance.

By the way, did all forget that there was like zero official response for TW3 Linux saga? Not from CDPR, not from VALVE™.
By the way-2, it's not like we don't have planty of examples as to how games that would allegedly have Linux support went south.

Anyway I have learned for myself how to tackle Linux gaming.
Buy only games from Porting houses (Feral, Apsyr, etc.) or games that have day-0 linux support.
All the rest go: echo "SOME_NAME" >> ~/games/.blacklist
