Ships, choices and gods – some more thoughts on Pillars of Eternity II

Quoting: DaiKaiser93Never played the first PoE, should I play it first or should I skip directly to PoE II?
No reason to skip number one really. If you like II you would probably like number 1.

We have a review of XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, Commander
20 Sep 2017 at 12:17 pm UTC

I've been playing the heck out of it too, overall really enjoy it. My current Ironman/Classic run is one of the most nail-biting experiences I've had in gaming.

The Chosen aren't really that dangerous for all their arrogant banter, but their counter insurgency efforts are.

New classes are neat. Skirmishers are nice and reapers are phenomenal. Templars are terrible though. Those spend most of their time being dead weight.

I haven't found a way to get the SPARK back into meaningful play now though. Their resource costs are so high that I can't justify getting one until late in the game when it scarcely matters.

The alien rulers are kind of hapless now that I know what maps they will be on and those maps are untimed. I enjoy the payback for all the wreckage they pulled on me in the last expansion. :D

My biggest complaint really is that the end game feels slightly empty now once all the chosen are gone. XCOM always had that inverse difficulty curve where the game is hardest at the start but it feels exaggerated now.

Aspyr Media state they are looking at ways to improve Civilization VI performance on Linux

This one was insta-buy for me.

So far the port quality has been excellent. Glad to see they are continuing to make it better!

Quoting: ColomboThats all nice, but will they rework the system? I just can't play with party of characters, if said characters are not fullAI.
Well, if you are enough of a masochist you can just solo it :)

There was even an achievement for solo, ironman, hardest difficulty, path of the damned mode. A few people got it.

Torment: Tides of Numenera looks set to get a day-1 Linux release

Fantastic news.

Planescape Torment remains one of my all time favorite games. I can still remember vast amounts of that game's characters, settings, and story 16 years later.

I have some pretty high hopes for this one. :)

Linux Gaming in 2016, an end of year review

Liam, many thanks for your great efforts this year! Linux gaming has become vastly more capable, and you have become a key part of getting that message out. You do a great job striking the right tone and balance.

I had been periodically installing Linux since 2000 in the hope that it was "finally there" and I could leave windows but always found something pushing me back. Gaming was the last holdout. This year was the year I finally was able to abandon windows. Been on Linux since Feb and not a single need for Windows since.

Having a great website like this will help others realize that the gap has been closed well enough that they can jump too.

Total War: WARHAMMER released for Linux, port report and video

Even with a GTX 1070 the Game can't hold the 30 fps line. For me it's a riddle why all claim it would run with 60 fps on a GTX 970. Is there a video to prof this?
For what it's worth I have a GTX 970 and a first gen i7 at 3.5Ghz and have been consistently getting around 60fps at 1080p Ultra. It's really been much smoother than Attila was.

Linux overall market-share percentage falls on Steam in October

Quoting: reaVerThe hardware survey is probably a little iffy. Because Linux users tend to keep their PCs running (and steam too) so they never get presented with a survey.
I've often wondered what the criteria is for getting a Steam survey.

I was pretty confused about what a "Steam survey" even was when I first saw it mentioned on the site.

I've been using Steam practically since inception (I bought Half Life 2 on it on release day). I have never once seen this survey.

If frequency of logins matters that could explain it. I think I reboot maybe once every couple of months basically just for major patches that require it.

The latest Steam Hardware Survey shows a rather insignificant drop for Linux

I've been using steam since steam's inception. I've never once seen one of these surveys on windows or on linux.

I had no idea that such a thing existed until I saw it mentioned on this site.

I've always wondered what triggers it and if that could affect the numbers.

Sunday chat: What have you been playing, and what do you think?

I'm a recent convert to Linux. I've installed it periodically for over a decade always going back to windows for one reason or another. The last reason was games. A couple months ago I realize that virtually every single game that I have played in the last two years is now on Linux and virtually everything coming out that I want to play is also on Linux. It's like I'm somehow the target linux gamer. So I've made the final jump and sticking with it this go around. So far it's been great.

Anyhow...
