Quoting: areamanplaysgameNonsense. The people who do things like those portrayed in GTA don't think they are the good guys. They just don't care about being the good guys. They might sometimes rationalize it that they have excuses, but that's not the same thing as thinking they are doing good.Quoting: CFWhitmanI just don't see the appeal of playing as someone who is obviously a bad guy. For example, the whole GTA series is completely lost on me. Never played them; never wanted to.I guess you are suggesting that a protagonist in the GTA series is "obviously a bad guy." That seems to be "highly dependent on your point of view" as well. Certainly, they do bad things, but so do a lot of "heroes." A lot of games have protagonists who run around killing people but aren't coded as "criminals."
I play a lot of different games, not all of them free of violence.

I also can understand games (or other media) that gives you a different perspective about scenarios that are really highly dependent on your point of view. A lot of conflicts are carried out entirely by people who think of themselves as the good guys. I just don't see the appeal of playing as someone who is obviously a bad guy. Besides, games where you don't kill/smash anything are rare, beside maybe sport and pure "puzzles".
Out of curiosity, which games do you play ?

Take-Two filed a lawsuit against the reverse-engineered GTA III and Vice City developers

Someone analyzes the original program to figure out how it works/interfaces with other software. They document this as they go along without any references to actual code.
Someone else takes the documentation and writes compatible code without ever directly seeing how the original code works.
The information presented here doesn't actually reveal whether this reverse engineering was done in a "clean room" manner or not.

Quoting: 3qET7rL9BdI might be misunderstanding but it doesn't look like a clean room implementation like OpenRA, CorsixTH, OpenMW and GemRB. Instead they've reversed engineered the binaries to get the source code.Clean room re-implementations are reverse engineered. Of course, a clean room re-implementation is done as follows:
As long as it's not linux/cross-platform skeleton/compatibility layer, all of the code on the repo that's not behind a preprocessor condition(like FIX_BUGS) are completely reversed code from original binaries.

Valve dumped Debian Linux for Arch Linux with SteamOS 3 because surprise - faster updates
11 Aug 2021 at 3:05 pm UTC
Even Debian Sid is not usually as up to date (especially when it comes to graphics drivers) as Arch. Also, it is in my experience more trouble to manage a Sid installation than it is to manage an Arch installation (of course Debian stable is one of the easiest distributions to manage of all, but that's not relevant here). Sid is intended for experimentation/development of upcoming stable versions of Debian, while Arch is intended to be used by people who like to live on the bleeding edge. Either one could be used as a basis for Steam OS of course, but Arch is likely to be a better fit for Valve's purposes. That's not to say it isn't a close call.

Quoting: LinasDebian is not perfect, but lack of updates is not the reason why they switched. At least not the way you think.I'm not sure if this was intended to be a response to my post, but let me clarify.
Debian is, at it's core, a rolling distribution. It is interrupted every two years by a few months long freeze period when the release happens. But that is meant for servers and enterprise environments, where stability is paramount. If you want bleeding edge, you just keep on rolling.
The simple truth is that a lot of technology choices are quite arbitrary, and are very often based on personal preferences. We talk about the best tool for the job, and like to compare things to each other. But often they are not better or worse, just different.
Even though I am a Debian fanboy, I think what Valve is doing is very cool, and I will happily run SteamOS/Arch on my Steam Deck. Although I am going to replace KDE with GNOME, because of course you would.

I use Debian on all the servers I administer. However, I use Xubuntu with selected updates from PPAs and the mainline kernel updater for my desktop/gaming computer. I think the current approach for SteamOS 3 is probably a lot better for Valve's purposes than sticking with a Debian base and trying to update that enough.

To be honest Touch of Evil isn't exactly my favorite noir film. It feels a bit tedious and bogged down in places. Of course there are several noir films I like a lot, and I don't hate Touch of Evil or anything like that.

Quoting: LanzYes, those versions should be good. This seems most likely the issue Swanny mentioned above that is present on both the Linux and Windows versions of the game. You end up having to reduce the detail because the game can't handle it rather than because your hardware/graphics stack can't handle it.Quoting: CFWhitmanKernel 5.12.14-arch1-1Quoting: LanzThe crashes persist in the desert area for me on a Radeon 6800 XT as of June 28 2021.What versions of the kernel and Mesa?
