Nearly five years after the Kickstarter, Carmageddon still isn’t on Linux despite the stretch goal being reached

I was very excited when I saw this Kickstarter campaign because I remember my uncles playing the original games when I was a kid and having tons of fun with them. I think it's the second project I backed and Kickstarter was still a new concept to me. Now Stainless is a company I never want to support again and I just don't give a shit about the franchise anymore. It's sad.

I've backed several other projects on KS and IGG since, however, and had positive experiences with nearly all of them. You just gotta be discerning and see if the things promised to you are likely to be achieved by the creators based on their track record--or determine how much money you're willing to gamble on indies that don't have much of a reputation. In this particular case, a company that adds Linux support in a stretch goal as an afterthought is very different from a company that provides a Linux demo up front and expects a simultaneous release.

I always shake my head when I see someone say they'll never use crowdfunding again because they got burned by one project. It's like saying you fell victim to phishing and you'll never use e-mail again. You're blaming the tool and giving up on all the useful things it can do in the right hands.

Linux market-share on Steam dropped 0.08% in December 2016

Quoting: Nor MantisI don't pay attention to what Steam says. But in my personal life I had more people ask me about Linux in 2016 than any year before. That is a big sign for me when people ask me on their own.
Windows 10 is starting to bear fruit :) Several of my friends don't want to "upgrade" and are hearing horror stories about those who did. Meanwhile when I troubleshoot their Windows problems I just jokingly remind them that I don't have those kinds of problems on Linux, without being an ass about it (after all, we have issues of our own). Over time they get curious and start asking me about Linux on their own. I think for many people, trying Linux is too much of a bother, but if the alternative is bad enough and they have someone to guide them through it they'll go for it. And right now the alternatives to Linux are pretty damn awful.

Quoting: g000hJust had a look at your Info specs. 8GB RAM, Core i5, and GTX 560. I don't think you'll have problems managing with Mad Max on your current rig as long as you don't set the graphics quality too high. Also, note that it only takes a graphics card to take you up a notch. GTX 1050ti 4GB is nice, cheap, and low power.

Quoting: SalvatosCrap, wish my rig could play Mad Max. At this price I'm tempted to buy it anyway, but it will likely be years before I upgrade again so I will surely have other opportunities.

I'm tempted to get the Shadowrun bundle, though. I've yet to play anything in that universe and it has intrigued me for more than a decade now.
Thanks for taking the time to look that up :) I'm looking to buy a car, so I definitely won't be investing in gaming for a while even if it's just the GPU. I'll just bide my time, I'm used to it :)

Discord announce their Linux client is now officially supported and out of beta
11 January 2017 at 6:04 pm UTC

I'll try it out, but at 200 MB of RAM I'll probably end up going back to the browser client instead since Firefox is always running anyway. On the other hand, I could probably close FF while I play games and keep only Discord open now that I can run it on its own.

Anyway thanks for the heads up, I didn't get any notification that the client was out.

Quoting: natewardawgThanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind. Do you know of a name of one of these companies?
Comgateway is one such service. I never got around to trying them since they're still too expensive for the kind of items I (would) buy in the US, but I can't imagine they couldn't cut your price down from $1000!

Editorial: A chat about asking developers for a Linux port

QuoteIt has come to my attention recently that some people have been taking a really hard stance against developers who want to gauge interest for a Linux port.

Can you link some examples? I'm not actively reading the Steam forums, so maybe I'm out of the loop?

The discussion in the comments here also seems to go all over the place, touching various issues.
It was a couple articles here on GOL about developers asking for this kind of show of hands. The titles should make them obvious to find if you look at the past few days.

A certain user in a previous article made a particularly cogent point: Linux ports typically get 1-3% of sales across the board. Asking people to raise their hands repeatedly (across multiple games/developers) to show interest is indeed pointless if you can just look at the stats and figure out if that percentage makes it worth it for you. In fact that's a lot more reliable and safe for developers than trying to gauge subjectively whether X number of posts in a Steam forum in a given time frame means sufficient sales to make a port viable.

I don't resent them at all for asking, but it would be more helpful for us to show them figures when we see them asking for a show of interest than to roll our eyes or say "yes please."

Looks interesting. I don't do JRPGs too often, but I'll keep an eye on this one if it does release on Linux.

Quoting: Tchey5€ a month feels too much for the content of the website, i would pay 1€ or 2€, without premium, only to support "somehow", like i support other websites like general news (not video game related, i mean world news) and other topics.
You can contribute any amount you like as long as you're fine with not getting the "rewards" (which in this case is just a tag under your avatar if I'm not mistaken). For instance you can see (as of now) that out of 196 patrons, only 111 chose the $5 tier - which is the only tier.
