I think Valve has known this was coming for a bit and the news, perhaps later than it should have, has kicked them back into gear as a software developer again. Didn't they acquire a few studios several months or a year back? I think you're right, though, that in retrospect, I bet they wish they hadn't taken the "easy way" out the last few years. While I don't think they're going anywhere soon, Valve may certainly need to ramp up their own offerings as counter "exclusives" to what Epic is doing.

Apparently it kinda works on Steam Play, but I'm really looking forward to the native version. Insurgency is a favorite.

Nothing imminent. I think in the past the Linux versions of X games came out several months after initial launch, usually benefitting from all the bug fixes and tweaking of the Windows version. Sadly, the Windows version doesn't work with Steam Play, which is surprising as the Windows version works via Vulkan.

2020 is indeed far away in computer years...

However, and this almost certainly isn't the place for this, I don't see the point of an AMD card. I'm thinking of getting a new desktop and it appears on Linux even the fastest AMD card is slower than the Nvidia 1070 I've been running the past two years without issue. Except if you're very devoted to the idea of FOSS for drivers, and if you're not cost retrained, why go AMD? Again, taking the FOSS vs non-FOSS out of the equation... Honestly wondering.

Given my space sim obsession, I need to check this out. I've never given it a shot. There are some players out there who fully believe this is the best space combat MMO ever, so I should try it at some point.
