Well isn't this nice not only is Feral porting games to Linux at the speed of a cheetah ;) and please by all means don't stop. But they are effectively helping me in sorting out my gaming schedule for the rest of the first quarter :)
Just as I was getting bored of Pac-Man 256, Bandai Namco added another Linux game to their humble bundle, Attractio, which looks very interesting and should keep me busy until Hitman sneaks into my Steam Library next week. Which I'm sure will keep me busy for the next two weeks until Dirt Rally comes flying into my library to keep me busy for the next 2 or 3 weeks thereafter.
So all in all thanks Feral for all the great games, and all the best for the rest of 2017. Not just in porting a ton of games as I'm sure you've already planned but also in landing more developers and publishers this year. Now I know, a lot of Western developers and publishers are closed to Linux as a platform due to outdated views and mindsets. Yes I'm looking at you EA, Ubisoft and Bathesda.
But here's really hoping you guys can get some deals with either Capcom, Konami or Bandai Namco because Resident Evil, Metal Gear and Tekken. Also they tend to make a lot of console exclusive games still and technically Steam machines are consoles ;) and let's face it having games on Steam with just a SteamOS badge can help grow Linux quite a bit. But I'm gonna stop now because I'm just talking myself all excited now :)

Haha Spacious Skies, finally the reveal. Can't wait for the game, my pc and racing wheel is ready to go. Keep up the awesome ports Feral you guys rock :)
Now all we need on Linux is a good Hero shooter, a soccer/football game for the masses and a fighting game. So BattleBorn being 2K & Gearbox is our best bet, PES2017 given FIFA isn't on Linux and MacOS should help their numbers quite a bit and here's hoping Feral can pick up Bandai Namco as a publisher this year because I'm a huge Tekken fan and Tekken 7 is coming this year to Windows already and is using Unreal 4 so why not. Not to mention all the other Bandai Namco titles that could follow.
I've already bought the Bandai Namco bundle hoping they'll become aware of Linux as a market as THQ did back in the day with their first bundle, besides the bundle has one game for Linux so all is not lost. Here's hoping :)

I didn't find Deus Ex: Mankind Divided to be a surprise release. We knew about it coming out for quite some time before it did come out. I personally found Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II to be the biggest surprise. For me that game just came out of nowhere. Have to say I was very happy when it did show up in my library :)
Microsoft announces new DirectX Shader Compiler that's open source

Keeping this code closed source would do them more harm than good I personally think, mainly because of how SPIR-V works over HLSL and GLSL previously. SPIR-V can make use of both GLSL and HLSL, it simply converts them to SPIR-V once at build time not everytime at runtime, which is how it's done currently and is quite complex due to there being multiple rendering backends and not to mention bytecode at runtime. There are libraries and translation layers that assist in reducing the complexity of this process, but having this process completely removed is going to be a big step in the right direction. Don't get me wrong it still needs to do the compiling and caching though, but the responsibility of that is now moved to the game engine and not the GPU driver.
The point is, having SPIR-V be able to work with GLSL and HLSL on equal ground is probably what drove Microsoft to open-source this DirectX shader compiler. Just my opinion.

Quoting: TealDamn, that's some good news.Yeah agreed, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. It basically comes down to Microsoft open sourcing a DirectX shader compiler and not even the entire compiler as a whole but rather a utility for converting HLSL into DXIL, if I read the description correctly.
I bet it's mostly to make HLSL compete with SPIR-V a bit better, but if competition leads to open sourcing things, that's to great benefit of everyone!

Quoting: EikeThat is correct yes, this article on VG247 also confirms this saying that in February last year the sales stood at 33 Million. So with it now being 37 million I suppose you could say that Civ 6 sales account for the largest part of the additional 4 million sales to date. www.vg247.com/2016/02/19/the-civilization-series-has-sold-33-million-copies-since-it-debuted-in-1991/Quoting: Sgt.Romeo9Aspyr Media announced today that Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, the next entry in the award-winning Civilization® franchise, which has sold-in over 37 million units, is coming soon to Linux! This is all Civs together, not the latest one, right?

Quoting: ColomboSo anyone knows what actually happened? This is just speculation but I think it maybe had something to do with overall game sales. We know that Windows and MacOS was originally planned with the release last year in October. Perhaps the game first needed to achieve a milestone in sales overall before they could or would port to Linux. Just something about the way they wrote the first line in the announcement: Aspyr Media announced today that Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, the next entry in the award-winning Civilization® franchise, which has sold-in over 37 million units, is coming soon to Linux!

@liamdawe I actually do have a question that I'm very curious to get an answer on. What is Aspyr's plans going into 2017 with relation to graphics APIs. I know from their blog they've stated that they are not too fond of Metal and so I was wondering are they looking to stick with OpenGL for the time being, use Vulkan and Metal side by side for MacOS and Linux ports or use Vulkan with MoltenVK for Linux and MacOS? An in-depth answer on this would be very insightfull.
Multiple statistics have shown Linux market-share doing better than ever

Quoting: [email protected]Yeah, agreed. The Steam HW survey is not only inaccurate but in my honest opinion geared towards Windows. The reason I say this is basically anyone who dual boots will show up as Windows not Linux, unless you go out of your way, way out of your way to rectify this which most people don't do. Other than that, if you use Windows in any place in your life and access Steam there you're a Windows user not a Linux user. So, if you buy your games on a Win PC at work, or a work laptop using Windows or any other similar issue. You're counted as a Windows user and that game sales is a Windows sale not Linux.Quoting: Purple Library GuySo . . . to point out the simple and obvious, among all those sites the lowest figure is over 2%.Or the Steam HW Survey is shit.
We have 2.2%, 3.8%, 5.6%, 3%. All in all, the 1% figure can maybe be put to bed.
So either there's something odd about Steam statistics, or Linux is used more for everything else but gaming.

From what I can see and understand this has nothing to do with the porting process or with Feral. They have taken it apon themselves to try and resolve it for over a year which is great but at the end of the day it's not their issue to fix really.

Quoting: SaladienThe missing cross platform support is a huge problem for me as well. Hopefully such things won't happen again in the future because the main developers use cross platform compilers from the start.Yeah it all really depends on the Original developer using that game engine again or any game engine they design in the future that is designed in a similar way to give this issue. The fact that it relies so much on timing mechanisms within the mechanics of the game engine in my honest opinion is just crazy and over complex.

I just wish people would read the categories, descriptions before posting. Just to keep the results clean in the end. Especially with the following two categories: Favourite FOSS Project and Favourite Open Source Game.
The description for Favourite FOSS Project reads: Vote for your favourite game engine, open source emulator etc created for games that DON'T support Linux. So, you obviously look at projects that make open source engine clones where you just have to dump the original game files such as OpenRCT2, OpenMW, CorsixTH etc... Or Emulators of entire console systems such as: PCSX2 for PS2 and Dolphin for Nintendo GC and Wii.
Favourite Open Source Game is pretty self-explanatory, open source games that can be download as a fully working title meaning both the game logic and assets are open source and included such as 0 A.D., Super Tux Kart, Open TDD, Flight Gear, etc...
Problem is now there are games in the FOSS projects category and FOSS projects in the games category and in some cases the game or project are in both.
