What we expect to come from Valve to help Linux gaming in 2021
17 Jan 2021 at 12:10 pm UTC

Hmmm I find it a strange move to prioritize this in 2021. This seems to be aimed at Windows users willing to try out gaming on Linux. But no Windows user is going to give up his OS and setup that they have been using for years for a different platform just to realize they can't play many of their loved AAA multiplayer titles.

This is why I think the priority needs to be put on having ALL games at least playable on Linux first. This means working on the persisting Anti-Cheat issues as well as getting done further features that are currently not on-par with Windows performance like Raytracing.

GOL asks: what are you playing? Come chat

Started playing Black Mesa today, and I have to say I was astonished how immersed I got in the game, especially since I've already played through the original half-life at least twice. The starting level is so ridiculously funny! You can throw dustbins at your colleagues or ring the alert to get the security guy in a lot of trouble. I had a really hard laugh when playing it and that's happening quite rarely.

There is also one other thing I like about the game: the "old-style" gameplay, simple and refreshing. There are no RPG elements in this shooter, no god-mode augmentation that lets you see through walls, or suddenly become invisible. And DAMN I forgot how good hand-crafted tube levels can be. No open-world-bullshit that lets you "explore" repeatable and boring tasks along the way, just action-packed levels where after each corner a new surprising enemy or a cool physics puzzle is waiting for you.

I had forgotten about half-lifes well-earned legacy, which gave rise to the success of one of the largest companies in the gaming industry. The level design is seriously superb, even by today's standards, and I'm looking forward to yet another playthrough, plus the new Xen levels they've put in there.

AMD confident in Zen 3 CPUs and RDNA 2 GPUs launching in 2020

Can't buy an AMD GPU as I'm doing machine learning and Nvidia cards are much better at that. So I'm waiting for the new Nvidia GPU series. For CPUs it's getting more interesting. I want to buy a complete new PC setup and since I guess a lot of gamers will upgrade their PCs for Cyberpunk 2077, I'd like to buy stuff sooner rather than later, but I think I will at least wait for the Zen 3 CPUs to release (and buy all the other stuff like mainboard, RAM etc. soon).

Linux Mint votes no on Snap packages, APT to block snapd installs

Hot take: Ubuntu is meant to be the most locked-down distro. Imho, it is meant for people who want to have an easy start with linux and who know shit about computers. If I was to install a linux system for my mom, I would pick Ubuntu for a distro. Canonical has it all cut out for her and it is convenient not to struggle with the details.

It's fine with me if people don't like snaps for one or the other reason, but actively prohibiting users from using it seems kind of a drastic way to me.

Stadia Pro will soon drop down to one free month

I just tested it just for fun and wow what a bad experience that was. I have a 200 Mbit/s connection and at the time no one except me was using the internet, so I had the full bandwidth at my disposal. I play games in 1080p and for me that's enough, but the game (PUBG) was still blurry very often, although when checking the stadia menu, it said that I have an excellent connection. I must say the video quality really disappointed me.

Also the whole thing is still pretty raw. For example, I simply wasn't able to quit PUBG. There was this menu where you could choose resume, settings etc. but there simply was no entry for "quit" so I ended up alt-tabbing out of chromium to quit it manually.
Then, once you've chosen one pro game to play, your stadia home screen is a wallpaper-sized picture of that game with a play button on it. No "pro library" to choose one of the other pro games. If you want to do that, you must go to the store and find the game in an alphabetically sorted list (as far as I've seen, there is not even a search function for the store).

I had considered stadia to become a PC alternative for me, since the monthly price is less than half of what would accumulate to get a new PC and upgrade it every now and then. But good thing I tried it first. For me the only reason to subscribe to pro for a Linux gamer would be if you're desperate to play games that are unplayable on Linux due to anticheat (and pay a hefty 120 bucks a year for that).

Otherwise I suggest you spend the money on something that's actually worth it. Like supporting GOL :)

As long as it's free though, it doesn't hurt to try I guess.

Reminder: Update your PC info for the next round of statistics updates

I was just recently checking out the statistics page for the first time in more detail, and man that's a lot of data there! I think it's a really cool feature to have here at GOL. I was kind of astonished that the majority of people actually use arch. Also I wouldn't have thought that KDE plasma is the most popular DE, since I personally think it's more for power users who know how to handle all the customisation stuff that you can do there without breaking anything :D

I find it weird antergos is counted separately. Imho, it's just a GUI installer for arch xD.

I humbly second that suggestion on YT that you should have some sort of text/image showing the current subject, just for us to keep track of what you're currently talking about.
Yup, I agree for those watching the video rather than just listening. Already have some ideas on this, to keep it simple while giving people something to see.

This is absolutely something I will do for the next one.
The podcast is a really cool idea! I liked it very much! As for the video, why not show yourself to your audience? Or maybe some kind of split screen with a video of you describing the stuff and having some info regarding the current topic displayed along with it? Would also add some personal flavor.
