The Steam Hardware Survey for October 2018 shows a small drop for Linux, a look at daily and monthly active users

Quoting: jardonSo maybe the key to getting Asian on board for Linux is actually Microsoft making their activation DRM harder to crack?

The problem is – Microsoft doesn’t want to. They mostly earn their money from companies who cannot risk using bootleg software and they know that the best way to make companies to use their software, including their OS, is to keep it familiar – if every employee knows Windows, and every management person knows Windows, then company will buy Windows. So it is in their interest to keep everybody using Windows, even if whole populations of large countries pirate it and MS doesn’t get a penny from individual users. MS knows that and they won’t really fight it, Windows piracy is their best marketing.

I guess the upward trend for two months was all the people installing Steam on their work/home server/old laptop/virtual machine Linux boxes to check out Steam Play + Proton. Now the hype ends, and so we get back to our regular numbers.

Overall I get the impression that since Steam survey favours new installations, it is a better estimate of a time derivative of the marketshare (ie. the rate of change of the marketshare) than of the marketshare itself – it tells you more which systems/hardware configurations are growing and gaining users, not how much of the marketshare they actually currently have.

No Brakes Games have discontinued Linux support for Human: Fall Flat

Also seems they dropped Linux support without any communication about it. They’ve written the linked comment only after somebody noticed it and explicitly asked about it.

I’m glad I haven’t decided to, when I considered buying this game.

EA's experimental Halcyon game engine has Vulkan and Linux support

As I understand it, the SEED division is pretty independent inside EA, and their aim is to experiment with various new technologies related to gaming, not focused on providing a new AAA title on tight schedule. So they eg. create (at least some of) their software in Rust, and not C++ like the rest of the industry – see eg. this tweet, and this, and repositories they fork / contribute to. I wouldn’t normally expect EA to look into new emerging programming languages, and yet it seems that’s what SEED does, so it does not really surprise me that they also investigate open APIs and Linux support.

Space sim 'Helium Rain' has left Early Access, code is open source

Has anyone had any success playing it with a Steam Controller? The game seems to run fine, but it does not recognize the left and right stick button clicks, which by default are used to roll – so no way for me to manually dock to a station with a controller.

There are alternative controller profiles which do not use sticks to roll, but they use those buttons for other controls…

I guess I could just map the stick clicks to Q and E keys, but I don’t like hacking around half-working features.

Yeah, and the russians perhaps have found out, that video games are a great part of information war.
You need a better story than "our ship failed because of technical issues", make a cool game with the story "an enemy spy caused the problem"...

Well. This particular game is being made by a Polish studio (including some former CDPR employees).

(Although some Russians, at least voice actors, must be working on the game.)

Linux market share on Steam now at a 16 month high after a rounding error was fixed

Steam Survey shows Linux increase at +0.11%, which suggests they also revised the previous month and it puts it at 0.67% instead of 0.59% (before they reported 0.12% increase from 0.59% to 0.71%).

SC Controller driver and UI version 0.4.5 is out, last release for a while

I don’t have Dead Cells, but I haven’t had any problems remapping it for Borderlands 2, BioShock Infinite, Victor Vran, Graveyard Keeper, West of Loathing, Stardew Valley, and some more…

I only used sc-controller while experimanting with a few non-Steam and wine games. As I hardly play anything outside of Steam now, I haven’t really use sc-controller for half a year now.

Quoting: PinballWizardThis is a big deal- also, why on earth doesn't the steam controller configuration work on the linux client for steam? They have their own Ubuntu-based distribution this is meant to run on so why on earth doesn't it work in Ubuntu itself?

What? Steam Controller on Linux Steam works perfectly well, at least for native games. This tool is helpful for games outside of Steam, for those people who don’t want to use Steam client (the other way to get SC working for non-Steam games is to add them to the Steam library, like one would probably do eg. on Windows).

EDIT: OK, one exception to the perfectly well part. For some reason there is no force-feedback available for Steam Controller on Linux with the Steam client.

Quoting: DolusPeople ARE leaving Linux over this.

People were also leaving, or even didn’t bother to try to get their code merged, over lack of the CoC and abusive language on the mailing list. You can’t have both.

I’d rather have people not fear trying to contribute to Linux.
