Pavilion, a strikingly beautiful fourth-person puzzling adventure is coming to Linux
25 Apr 2016 at 7:01 pm UTC

Quoting: melkemind
Quoting: CandricSWhat is a fourth-person?

First-person is when you're seeing from the point of view of the character and third-person is when you're observing the character as if there was a camera there. What would fourth-person be?
Just taking a guess here, but maybe you don't control the person at all, just the environment. Or maybe you make suggestions to the character and they may or may not listen? I have no idea. :S:
Yeah, weird way to describe the viewpoint. I think it's just 1st person is through the eyes, 3rd person is over-the-shoulder and so they've gone with 4th person for a fixed viewpoint. Never come across it before.

They've got me wondering what a 2nd person viewpoint might look like...

Stealth game Shadwen from Frozenbyte to launch in May, Linux should be day-1
14 Apr 2016 at 9:27 pm UTC

Quoting: tmtvlWelp, guess I'd best quickly inform them that the demo is completely non-functional on my machine, might delay the Linux port by a day or two.
What does "welp" mean? I see it all the time these days, but can't understand the difference between welp and well. Is there one?

Really looking forward to this - looks superb. I love stealth games that have a strong story and this looks like ticking all the right boxes. Like Thief, Mark of the Ninja and Ico all rolled into one!

Consortium: The Tower looks incredible, promising day-1 support and needs funding (updated)

Thanks for the update Stesen. Can I ask a couple of questions, since your update still leaves me with some uncertainty - mainly because you keep inferring things should work, but if you don't know, I don't see how you can expect us to pledge.

So my two questions are: 1) how does the Linux build work right now and 2) Can you confirm that Linux builds be available at your $50 tier "Rook"?

Given your response, if you were on Kickstarter, you'd probably have my money in the near future. Sadly, I don't trust Fig, but best of luck with your campaign.

Wouldn't touch these guys with a barge pole. Not only did they fail to close on their original promise (then compound the failure by pushing Linux people towards wine, urgh), they then edit their FAQ to remove the Day One promise for Linux.

Also, this:
How will the digital copy of The Tower be distributed?
Steam, GOG.COM and Humble Bundle will be our primary digital retailers of choice for the PC/Mac version of The Tower.
Emphasis mine. Such a little thing, but it speaks volumes that they don't even consider Linux as a target platform in other FAQ entries.

But then at the end:
What platforms will The Tower be available in?
PC / Mac / Linux / XBox One / PS4
Yeah. We'll see.

I can't even bring myself to gripe about their use of "PC" instead of "Windows". It would be falling on deaf ears here.

[EDIT: Also, this:
So the short answer is yes, C2 has a much greater likelihood of seeing a Linux release. Can't guarantee a day 1 Linux release, but it will be something we'll be looking at from the start.
So... is it a target platform, or is it just "likely" that we'll see a release?? Jesus.]

The Witness may one day see a Linux port, for fun or for ideological purposes

but we would not try to support it seriously
I'm not going to buy this, seriously. Blow now ranks updown there with Newman. Hopefully that's where they'll stay.

Sword Coast Legends developer n-space has closed up shop

Quoting: GuestOnly real way to succeed is perhaps via what Obisidian do and actually listen to what the PC playerbase wants and it wasn't a streamlined action RPG (I suspect a lot of those 50% who were happy would also be happy with a more traditional in depth RPG).
Ironically, I enjoyed my time with the Sword Coast Legends campaign while I grew to hate Pillars of Eternity, largely because of how incredibly tedious that game was. I know I'm very much in the minority, though.
Maybe, but I also don't understand the love for PoE - it was a save-fest. If you walked into certain fights without having using a campfire before hand (in order to have your full arsenal of spells/abilities available), it was pretty much game over. That made gameplay and general adventuring tedious since you could only buy campfires back at your base (that I knew of). So much potential wasted by a tedious mechanic.

7 Days to Die alpha 14 released, Linux graphics broken again
27 Mar 2016 at 3:18 pm UTC

Yeah, I started playing this at Alpha 13.8 a couple of weeks ago - loved it. Great performance, great game play, lots of skills to upgrade, loved it. However, it's infuriating when games are released utterly broken. Same thing happened with Soul Axiom, which I recently refunded.

As for EA Hell, there's a few games going through this at the moment. I don't buy EA and haven't done since the early days when I took a chance on Prison Architect and Tabletop Simulator. They weren't terrible experiences, but they were a good couple of years in EA, which gets frustrating. I think the Fun Pimps probably have another year of EA ahead of them before they announce a release date.

Does your mouse flicker or flash constantly in Unity games? Here's a solution
26 Mar 2016 at 12:45 pm UTC

Hmm - never had this before. I'm running stock Ubuntu 14.04, 64-bit, Unity desktop. I have Nvidia proprietary drivers on - we have much the same set up. I checked the value using dconf-editor and it was on. I've turned it off to see if I see a difference anywhere.

PAYDAY 2 on Linux & SteamOS, some thoughts & port report

Regarding tearing - I take it you've got triple buffering enabled? Doing so completely fixed all screen tear for me.

As per Solar's post on the GoL forums last year:

Navigate to /etc/x11
Open xorg.conf as root
Locate metamodes HDMI-0: 1920x1080_60 +0+0 under Section screen which is near the bottom (of course you might not have the same resolution here)
and change it to metamodes HDMI-0: 1920x1080_60 +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }

Then save and reboot.
