Raspberry Pi OS gets some big updates, possible to run experimental Wayland

Quoting: RussianNeuroMancerTopic of this article is desktop feature,
Sure, if you consider one paragraph at the end defining the topic of the article

There are always plenty of interesting devices out there. I just don't think that there is a big market for small general purpose Linux (or any OS) machines.

The benefit of Rpi is the ecosystem around it rather than the device. Lots of howtos, lots of other people doing interesting things (same reason why Arduino is popular in spite of lots of micro controller hardware).
It will do enough for most tasks but if you want it as a dedicated desktop machine then there certainly are a number of better options out there.

Quoting: RussianNeuroMancerHonestly, it's a pity that RPi get all the fame while there is much more interesting boards with features like NVME support (many RK3399-based boards, such as Libre Computer Renegade Elite or NanoPC-T4) onboard USB Type-C or, you know, TWO TIMES HIGHER PERFORMANCE (like ODROID-N2+) is mostly unnoticed by media.
Rpi are a bit lacking in h/w features i agree (lack of dedicated channels for i/o is a real pain) but to be fair everything you've listed is 2x the cost of a pi.
A good chunk of the appeal of a pi for me is the not bothering too much if i accidentally blow it up (mainly use the zero modules these days)
I simply don't have too many needs for a £100 device that will do basic tasks.

Now if it could integrate with my 3d printer so I could print out a scene from my favourite game i'd be interested

Valheim still growing with 4 million sales, hits top 5 of most played games on Steam ever

Have spent a tonne of hours playing this with my family.

Patch a couple of days ago has taken out my dedicated server though :/

Try to connect in, get a password prompt, then get a black screen with some ocean sounds in the background for 20 seconds and then a disconnect message.

Have updated the server but no go.
Can still spin up a local server which other people can connect to so just copied the world over.

Problem is that the person running the server gets world save pauses which are a pain, especially when they happen mid fight. Have died twice because I missed a block

Quoting: TheRiddickPLEASE tell me their using unity's vulkan api for the linux port. If I see another company rolling back to outdated broken slow opengl for that engine, I'll scream, let it die already!

If you've played 'Pillars of Eternity 2' or 'Battletech' you understand the horrible woes of the OpenGL component, and yes at first glimpse it looks to work well, but as you play through those games (and many others) it gets real nasty, quick.
I didn't look too much into what engine they were using but after an hour of gameplay where it would freeze for 30 seconds or lock constantly I switched to Proton and then finished the game without a single issue....

War Thunder now has a Battle Pass with both free and paid items

Quoting: keanI have Premium account and I thought this is a greedy move from Gaijin, however, it way too different and it really worths getting it. I also bought my Premiun during 50% discount, 20€ for 6 months.
Honestly the monetisation in this game is getting pretty crazy.
Premium accounts aren't really cheap outside of sales.
You don't need a premium account to play the game but once you start getting into higher tiers the grind becomes obscene without it.
Then you have a separate level of premium tanks which are pretty expensive as well and are definitely p2w levels of op.

I still like it and play it daily but once my membership expires in a few weeks time it might be time for an evaluation which is a shame since i'm really enjoying the new graphics and performance boost with Vulcan.

War Thunder gets a huge upgrade along with Vulkan by default on Linux (updated)

I spent some time playing with this today. Current issue seems to be for xorg. I run Mint 19, installed awesomewm, switched to it after restart and it now runs.
Performance is really good with vulcan. Getting 100+ FPS on high where I would get 30-40 previously on medium.

Launching from steam is broken so need to navigate to the install directory and run launcher manually.

A patch came in while I was testing however and now smoke effects are a bit broken but would expect that to be fixed soon.

As far as future Linux support I wouldn't count on it unfortunately. Gaijin really don't seem to care much about it. The recent submarine mode isn't coming to Linux for example.
I enjoy it while it lasts but suspect it may go away at some stage :(

What have you been playing lately? It's chat time

I've recently introduced my son to Age of Empires II so the whole family has been addicted to that.
All friendly currently as we play as the same team.
Might not be so friendly when we play against each other!

Dying Light turns five years old, send Zombies flying in the HyperMode event - big sale too

I played it native for most of the game however there seemed to be a bug where it would consistently crash during an underwater section of the story. Changed to Proton and it worked fine for the rest of the game.
Great game though, once you're more comfortable night time is the most fun!

Party-based RPG 'Tower of Time' is now out in full and it's great

I bought this in early access. Looked interesting at the start but needs a lot of optimization. Was getting about 7 fps as the camera was panning around.
Will give it a try, hopefully it been updated a bit since I last had a look.
