5 years... well all considered I can say Valve had a successful and fertile ground with Linux. I still don't know the meaning of the S machines (in my mind they feel like they are still to come out) but Steam runs perfectly and I am certain it made an important step for all gamers. Having that linux release simply didn't exist before. Now it is expected for some developers like paradox or indie games (generally talking).
I still think the availability of games wont make Linux more popular simply because it doesn't run as default when you buy a new computer and most people cant be bothered.
All in all, well done and let's never feel too comfortable with what we have, lets fight for more!

Since then nothing big. No more announcements, no GOG galaxy for Linux; suddenly CDProgectRED forgot about linux.
STEAM has done something similar, still promoting Linux games but if I am not too wrong, they even hinted on having a STUDIO for porting games 1:1 from windows to Linux. It can be possible as part of the agreement with Valve, when the Software House decides to put its game on Steam.
I have not seen anything of the sort. Steam and VALVE are so money centred that it will never happen! They started with good intentions and I bet that Steam Machines producers feel betrayed by this lack of support. Notice how many of these Steam Machines have not been in production anymore. Smart decision I would say, and VALVE suddenly stop talking about them. Just like they have done with HALF-LIFE 3. That is the policy and bad manners of big profit focused companies!
SHAME ON THEM!

Quoting: legluondunetAnd what about the linux game sales on GOG?GoG from CD Project RED is a weird one. They started in a very positive way, The Witcher 2 was announced for Linux, and they pushed much on the retro gaming for linux. Then they announced The Witcher 3 for linux and quickly backed out from that (after being the pushing force for Steam Machine - on the main page of Steam STORE).

You know? This developer has been criticised to the impossible but they are one of the first to have posted their games on Linux on day one.
They do it constantly and it seems overshadowed, it shouldn't.
They are a big company and they value a relatively small community like ours, which is rare for big companies (yes, EA, ACTIVISION, KONAMI, NAMCO, ECC... I am talking to you )
Good job!

Can people really get excited about the VR after all their lost interests? I don't wish them too much luck on that because frankly they...don't deserve it

Quoting: Mountain ManLosing interest is kind of their habit, from developing OS to hardware to games.Quoting: VinceNardelliStill, Valve has done a pretty crappy job with steam machine and the whole idea of linux more optimised than windows. This is really the problem. Valve was really excited about Linux gaming, got us excited about Linux gaming, got a few developers excited about Linux gaming, and then it's like they just sort of lost interest. I was really hoping they were more dedicated to this whole Linux thing than they have been.

This news hurt guys... But people want comfort over freedom and morals. I use Linux and wont use Windows not even in dual boot.
But imagine I am waiting for a game that I have been waiting for year, lets say the next Ken Levine game, after BioShock infinite.
Imagine it comes on win only. How difficult will it be for me not to use windows, even for that game?
The point is, more linux games will come and the customers will move towards it.
I still cant figure out how more linux games now lead to less linux users on steam. It just doesn't make sense.
Still, Valve has done a pretty crappy job with steam machine and the whole idea of linux more optimised than windows.
It s definitively not because of them that so many linux games are coming out.
I bet if Half Life 3 will ever come out it will be a Console only lol, give how much 'sense' they make right now

We will have to wait and see what the next month says.
There have been good news for the linux community, from the Atari box announcement, the new Ubuntu, I would add the Librem5 phone running linux, Skype and a consistent dedication from the linux community.
I am for one NOT double booting with windows anymore. I m mainly buying linux compatible games and software.
I am sure I am not the only one.
Plus, many people have been disappointed with windows and Apple iosx and considering linux to say the least.
Let's wait and see next month. If the trend still gives hope to linux in terms of numbers, well then we can fully be happy for this true achievement
