Quoting: Liam DaweVulkan only. As I understand, OpenGL is far more difficult to do anything like this.
Yes. I'd love to see something like vkBasalt for OpenGL too, but OpenGL is so mature by now that I imagine if it was easy (or even just “not virtually impossible”), it would already exist.

The Atari VCS team give another update - plus a proper look at the UI

My feelings about this thing have been up and down like a rollercoaster - sceptical, hopeful, sceptical again - but I have to say... they've done a pretty good job of that. I'm impressed.

I mean, not stunned - it just looks like another console. But it does look like a proper console, not a hacked-together, underpowered, pile of random parts that don't quite work together. Maybe they might just pull this off...

The Linux GOTY Award 2019 is now open for voting

Well, how about that? I do own a 2019 release. I've been playing it for so long in early access, I'd forgotten Planet Nomads was officially released last year. I kind of voted for it by default, though...

Quoting: appetrosyanWe got to make a game that uses Godoy go viral! It’s an app looking for a killer application.
True, but I suspect it'll be more like Blender (and Linux, I guess), just quietly gaining respect under the radar until one day you look around and find there's a ton of high-quality commercial games built on it.

Plague Inc: Evolved hits new all-time high on player count due to the Coronavirus outbreak in China

Quoting: TheRiddickI think like thousand people have got this virus (probably more) now and only ~26 confirmed deaths so far. Nature is going to need to do a HELL of allot better then that to wipe us out!
Let's come back to this statement in ~10 yrs to do the math.
A fair point, but remember SARS (which was also a coronavirus)? The initial panic was very similar, then it all just sort of... fizzled out. Maybe this one's tougher or something, but I'll begin to worry when people I know are catching it.

Black Mesa 1.0 preview coming soon - still getting big improvements to visuals and the AI

Quoting: dpanterPatiently waiting for them to finish Black Mesa already so I can replay the whole thing in style.
Hey... they still have to do Opposing Force and Blue Shift. :D

Seriously though, they've done an amazing job with this. I've become so used to Black Mesa that it's been quite a shock to be reminded how primitive the original GoldSrc version looked in the free-play that's going on right now.

Paradox to trial a subscription system to help with DLC overload for Europa Universalis IV
23 Jan 2020 at 2:28 pm UTC Likes: 2

I can never get particularly worked-up about Paradox's “DLC overload”, to be honest. The vast majority of it is cosmetic and can be easily ignored without affecting the quality of gameplay at all (other publishers would probably sell it in-game as microtransactions, which would bring down a whole different kind of ire on them). You'd really have to have more money than sense to spend £250 on the whole shebang. They usually end up with maybe half-a-dozen “real”, game-altering, DLC packages over the course of several years, and they're often on sale.

A subscription service is an interesting idea though, if it means you can try them out before buying outright. It all depends on the pricing, really.

Quoting: GuestSome keys are double, ah well. Good deal :D
I was just thinking that myself. I'll have to check what DLC I have, but I'm pretty sure the $1 tier is worth my while even though I already own the game.

Actually, that first screenshot looks suspiciously like PETSCII [External Link] to me.</pedantry>

(It is pretty cool though. :) And in fact, it's quite nice to see something like this for PETSCII, which was very common back in the day, rather than just plain old standard ASCII.)
