Steam Play Proton 4.11 released, a pretty huge release pulling in D9VK and a replacement for esync

Quoting: GuestAnyone tried Fallout New Vegas with this new version of Proton?
Just did. :)

It works, with some weird graphical artifacts; a sort of shadowing across the screen. Initially I thought it might be an HDR bug - it almost looks as if tonemapping is being applied to the wrong viewpoint - but I switched it off, and I'd be willing to bet that's it's actually one of the mods I've installed. I haven't tried vanilla yet.

If it isn't then you're probably best sticking to an older Proton. Otherwise, it seems fine.

I wonder if this'll fix the issues I've been having with Elite Dangerous. The framerate's all over the place, varying from well over 100fps down to 15-16 for no readily apparent reason. I could understand it if it was just struggling to render complex scenes, but the same static view can drop from 130 to under 20 and back again in a matter of seconds.

Fortunately, the serious drops are rare and it's playable, but it's very annoying. Both in itself and because I can't figure it out. :/

Anyway, happy birthday, Liam. I never thought I'd think of 31 as “young”. :O

The Linux-powered Atari VCS sounds like it's coming along

Quoting: GuestLast I looked, this Atari thing, is a bit pricey for what it is.
My thoughts precisely. At half the price it would be a no-brainer, although probably not feasible. However at somewhere between that and the actual price, it would certainly be more tempting.

I do like those controllers, though. Even if I never buy the console, I might get myself one of each. The stick would be great for retro-gaming, and the console-style controller (can we even call them “joypads” these days, with all those sticks and things?) looks like a prettier XBox controller. And c'mon... even though Atari isn't really Atari any more, that logo is still the coolest in videogaming. :)

F1 2019 - Feral Interactive ported previous versions to Linux, no sign for this one.
From memory, the last couple (and they were both odd-numbered years) appeared around the autumn after the original release. So I wouldn't count it out just yet.

Quoting: DuncI was about to say the screenshots look a lot like Skidmarks on the Amiga. Given what you've said, I wouldn't be surprised if it's an inspiration, at least as much as MM.
Eheh actually I played Skidmarks a lot, you are right. ^_^
I knew it! :D

Quoting: M@GOidAs of the gameplay, it is basically a drift game, not like the forgiving gameplay of Micro Machines. If you are not a fan of drifting, better not downloading this one.

Interested in Google's Stadia game streaming service? We have a few more details now

I can't put it any better than Shamus Young at the Escapist [External Link]:
Five years of Stadia will set you back $700, at bare minimum. (That’s the cost of the Founder’s Edition — which comes with three free months of premium access — and the monthly fee over the next 57 months.)

Who is this service for? It’s supposedly for people who want to play AAA games but don’t have access to AAA hardware. It’s for people who are into hardcore games but don’t mind an unavoidable baseline of input lag. It’s for people who can’t afford a $400 console but can afford to buy games at full price and pay an additional $120 every single year. It’s for people who have lots of devices who somehow don’t own any dedicated gaming hardware. (...)

Stadia is for casual gamers who are into hardcore titles and poor people with lots of disposable income. This is a service for nobody, and it makes no sense.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyThat's an odd "we", now that I think about it. I'm Canadian, and we never had the capacity, only the Americans did
Hey, don't talk yourselves down [External Link], eh?

Quoting: F.UltraSoon SpaceX will build the Falcon Super Heavy which will have capacity to send crews to both the Moon and Mars so there are still interesting times ahead!
Exactly. Although, as I understand it, Musk wants to skip the moon and go straight to Mars (before 2030, which, given the greater challenges involved, isn't that much further off than 1969 was when Kennedy announced his ambition). But I'm pretty certain Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin intends to go there.

(Also, since I'm posting YouTube links, for anyone interested in the AGC, this playlist [External Link] is essential.)

Quoting: DuncWhile I agree that on a “consumer”-oriented distro nobody should ever have to install from source, I can't understand the attitude that refuses to learn. You might find it useful or interesting in the future.
Dude, I used to run Slackware. I know all about building from source.
So you did learn, then. As I said, “I agree that on a 'consumer'-oriented distro nobody should ever have to install from source”. Nothing in my comment opposes yours.

"Useful or interesting" is for techie hobbyists, and I'm happy to leave it to them.
Well, firstly, “useful” is for anyone. But we're on a gaming site that eschews MS Windows. To that extent, aren't we all hobbyists? :)
