Aveyond 4, a popular Windows RPG released for Linux
23 Sep 2016 at 4:50 pm UTC

Cool!

Just curious - which RPG Maker was used to create this game? I thought it was XP. I know the new MV supports Windows and Mac, as well as iOS and Android - but not Linux. I'm curious how you ported it to Linux. Did you have to go through Enterbrain to make this happen?

The reason I ask is because I've been tinkering with VX Ace over the past year and am working on a RPG myself. I'd be curious to know if it's possible to port my project to Linux when I'm done, and if so, what I would need to do.

Note: I'm not doing commercial game development anymore, I'm just doing this project for fun. Right now I'm using VX Ace on a Windows virtual machine, and play-testing it is rather slow. I would love to be able to play my game on my Linux box if I can port it.

Thanks!

Thanks, philip550c! The web site will remain for the foreseeable future. Hosting has been paid for through the rest of the year, so I see no reason to take it down before then. After that, we'll see... maybe I can scale back to one of their cheaper plans, since I won't be using as much bandwidth.

Sslaxx, the RPG isn't far enough along to save anyone any time or expense - they might as well start from scratch with their own game. Only 20-25% of the game engine is coded, and on the art side, only menu art, a tree, and a few ground tiles were completed. Besides, I'd still like to tell that story myself someday - either in a game, comic, or some other form.

Thanks, everyone!

The primary reason I have to shut it down for awhile is my health, not money per se. I just don't have the stamina to keep working 12-14 hour days for month after month. I had to let something go. Since the game company never has earned enough for me to live on, I had to keep my paying job. Now I'm back to 8-9 hours per day, which is much more manageable for me. And it's still just part-time at the moment, so I'm only working 3 days a week. I go back full-time in January, but it's nice to have a couple of months to rest up first. I really need the break, and time to regain some of my strength.

I've got 8 more years before I can retire. Once that occurs, we'll see what happens. I'm already burned out, so I don't know if I'll get back into game programming or not. But I do still have a lot of different stories I want to tell, so I'm sure I'll find some way to tell them. If it isn't through games, it will be through some other avenue - like maybe web comics. I think it would be cool to do a web comic that is like the old "Choose Your Own Adventure" books - that would be sort of game-like. I enjoyed those books.

And you never know - when I'm retired, I won't have the stress of trying to make a business go, so I might just do games as a hobby again. We'll see... I'm sure the technology landscape will look a lot different in 8-10 years, so that will probably factor into whether or not I want to pick up game development again.

Word Play Deluxe word search game is released!

Quoting: Bumadarlooking at it its sort of out of my age group, but tried the demo and had a fun time, sadly I could make lots of words in my own language but they don't count ;)
Glad you enjoyed it, but yeah - it's an English-only game! hehe

And yeah, I agree the toy theme probably isn't the best theme to appeal to a wider audience, though there are other casual games on Windows like Teddy Factory, Toy Defense, and ABC Cubes: Teddy's Playground that use a toy theme. The main idea here was to quickly port the existing game with as few changes as possible, so I chose to keep the toy theme rather than rework the game to fit some other theme. Casual gamers usually don't have a problem with the toy theme, but I can see how more hardcore players would. Thanks for trying it anyway! ^_^

Dirk Dashing 2 on Ubuntu Software Center

It picked up quite a few yes votes, but it has a long way to go to get to the Top 100. Steam has a pretty hardcore gaming audience, so I expected that when I submitted it. Still, I look at it as another way to advertise and let people know about my games. And I picked up a few direct sales from it.

Thanks! I would certainly provide Steam keys for previous customers who wanted them, just like I did with Desura.

Yeah, it's a bit disheartening. But then again, I was forewarned that some of the steam players can be really rude with their comments.
