Quoting: CatKillerIf being on Steam gets you 43% more sales than not being on Steam, then the 30% pays for itself, even ignoring the saving in hosting and bandwidth costs. Everyone's free to make their own decisions of course, but "I'm not putting my game on Steam because I'd like to make more money" isn't a terribly reality-based position for anyone EA-sized and below.
What's this developers email or Twitter? Could somebody just tell him exactly this for crying out loud
Thanks but I am well aware of this - and being made aware of it on a regular basis
It is likely that the game will be on Steam some day, but I currently see no urgency for this.

Quoting: ChronariusReported the issue to the forum and Developer. The reaction was: SHUT UP! This is how it is meant to be.
A bit of an understatement there, it was more like you rage posted about a mechanic. Your wording was not only unhelpful but also violated our forum rules. The dev team is always open to constructive critizism - phrases like "Temporal Bullshit!" and "You are fucking kidding me?" I do not consider constructive.

Quoting: ChronariusBut what I found out later is that you can turn it off on a server. So why not in single player?
It is configurable to a great extent in single player, by clicking "Customize" on the create new world screen or by using the world config commands to modify an existing world - https://wiki.vintagestory.at/index.php?title=World_Configuration#Temporal_stability [External Link]

Minecraft Java will move to Microsoft accounts in 2021, gets new social screen

I feel obliged to mention that my reason to develop Vintage Story was in part motivated by Mojang being sold to Microsoft. I loved the idea of this small indie game studio being able to do their own thing and genuinely just wanting to make a great game.

Discarding the Mojang accounts seems like just another step of slowly embracing and eventually gobbling up the game for maximized monetization, in an abstract sense. They need to get back the investment, after all.

Quoting: ValckThat said, always-calling-home, constant-online-DRM in single player is what killed it for me.
There is no constant-online-DRM. The game makes one single auth check on startup. You can also log in once after install, then block the connection to the auth server and the game will keep on functioning forever.

Quoting: PhiladelphusSince a quick perusal of their site didn't answer my questions, I'll ask here: how does multiplayer work? Does it use a separate server and client system like Minecraft? Most importantly, does it require port forwarding to work?
Yes, its a separate server and client thing like Minecraft. Yes it requires port forwarding, it does however attempt to do that automatically using NAT-PMP and Upnp which works on about half of router setups. For the other ones port fowarding or upnp has to be set up manually.

Quoting: 14Are you required to authenticate with some server over the Internet like Minecraft? My kids and I couldn't play Minecraft the other day because we couldn't reach the auth servers. We could play Minetest without any problem though, of course.
Yes, it works similar to Minecraft. It requires at least one authentication. After that you can still play offline or connect to non-authenticated servers.

Oh man, that sucks. I didn't know about it being on itch; I had searched your site [External Link] and only found one relevant topic [External Link] with what I read as a tentative "maybe" at best.

Maybe you could post a link here on GOL and over in your forum as well?
Not that it makes a difference for me any longer; I went through Humble with a grumble, but I'd definitely have preferred itch.io had I known about it.

Anyway, all is well now and I'm really enjoying it.
Ok, I added it to the footnote on the buy game page and that forum post. I still need to advertise the alternative buying options a little stronger though. Thanks for the suggestions :-)

Quoting: ValckThank you so much for the writeup, and for your Let's Play series, I quite enjoyed it.

It actually persuaded me to buy the game, despite having to fill out annoying Google Recaptchas – seriously? Why do they think I might "be a robot" if I actually complete payment, that should be proof aplenty by itself. Also, it will forever escape me why a physical street address would be required for a digital download...

That said, after playing for a few hours now, I don't regret buying the game; it's definitely a worthy spiritual successor to the original Terrafirmacraft, and its development process definitely looks more active than any of the Minecraft successor mods.
Hey, main dev here. Sorry for the retarded captcha stuff. I hate those with a passion myself. I think I've now
updated the site to use reCAPTCHA v3 which should be less teeth grinding. Otherwise I intend to purchase the software soon so I can get source code access to make the process more user friendly. Right now its a cloud hosted solution.

I'd love to not record your physical address but as far as I am aware of I am legally required to collect that data. Either way, you can also purchase the game on itch.io, through the humble widget [External Link], or through the humble store (though all of which seem to require your physical address)

Glad to hear that the game is worth your money anyway! We'll definitely keep working on it
