there are more than those. who plays EA games anyway? nothing good hasnt been coming from there lately anyway...
same with Activisions-Blizzard .. just milking the money with few franchises they own. and just tweaking little bit the graphical quality every year without bringing anything innovative to the table.
well while many gamers do play EA, Activision and ubisoft games - there are still lots more than those.
Square Enix, Capcom, Bethesda(Zenimax), 2K Games, Eidos, all kinds of Sony departments, THQ, Rockstar, Gamersfirst (K2 Network) just to name some of them

im sure they have been in talks with big publishers to get their new titles to steambox. so probably they are quite well prepared for it already atm, if it really wants to come out this year.
about the old games. i guess its just the choice of the publishers, if its worth to port them to earn extra cash, wont really hurt steambox sales imo, cuz if there are some big hits coming right on the launch day, people will buy it anyway.

Steam working towards better supporting other distros!

this thread was about that steam is now focusing to make the packages available for other distros as well.
currently all non ubuntu based distros had to do a lot of work to get it working.
specially on 64bit systems.

Quoting: "Bumadar, post: 7385, member: 93"xpander, sorry but it does not, i have it running without root and without anything in /bin etcyes u do because u just extract the package and resolve ur dependency hell by hand. but thats not the way it will work in the future.

no, steam doesnt work like desura currently. yes u can install it to anywhere u want, but it still installs stuff to /usr (/usr/bin , /usr/lib and /usr/share)folders and wanting root privileges, every time there are updates to those files there.
desura currently does ship with its own dependencies and symlinks to system ones. Steam should do the same imo.
i wouldnt want steam to be integrated to packagemanager as it currently does, at least with ubuntu based distros.
the best way would be if steam was just like on windows. with a installer (nixstaller or mojosetup) and will include all the needed libraries with it(symlinking if available on ur distro).
mojosetup can check for libraries installed by the system i think? and install them if needed (would require root tho, but one time only)

Quoting: "Bumadar, post: 7369, member: 93"Xpander, that is how I have Steam running, since I can't use the .deb I just took what I needed and placed the files where I wanted them and run steam.sh from there. it updates itself there like Desura does.
from what I gather the only reason they want a package and root install is that steam then can add dependences itself ? if so I think they better of simply doing a sudo GUI when they want to add dependences instead of doing it in the background
totally agree

i have had many times close to pressing the buy button on this title on steam, but then i always thought that i have to run it through wine and there probably are some server (protection systems) issues and what not so i always gave up on it.
if it really comes to linux some day. then there is no excuse to not to buy it.
