Manjaro Linux devs show off the OrangePi Neo prototype handheld with gameplay
By Marlock, 18 May 2024 at 10:30 pm UTC

given the amount of pain and suffering some users got from the original Steam Deck wifi, i'd hope the specs for other linux handhelds would be careful to show they use wifi models with known-good linux driver support

is this a known info already?

EA SPORTS WRC is adding EA anticheat, breaking another game on Steam Deck / Linux
By iorekbyrnison, 18 May 2024 at 9:36 pm UTC

I'd like to make a note here:

Dirt Rally 1 and Dirt Rally 2.0 both are better games, with better physics and content, and are both available for a few bucks on any good key retailer- and both run gloriously on both desktop linux and the deck.

the first game, unlike the second, is also free of always-online nonsense, so it's my preferred version.

as always, these games from awful publishers with bad practices are rarely best in class anyways, so nothing of value was lost

EA want to put adverts in your video games to squeeze you for every penny
By 14, 18 May 2024 at 9:27 pm UTC

Umm, this news might be bad enough that I delete anything left on my computer that's related to EA. Do I have Titanfall 2 installed still? Probably nothing else installed besides that.

Square Enix shifting from "quantity to quality" and be more multi-platform
By 14, 18 May 2024 at 9:21 pm UTC

I think this news sounds great, you pessimists! This is what gamers want I'd say.

Probably a result of the feedback for all the FFVII versions and spin-offs. Well, partly at least.

Manjaro 24.0 released with KDE Plasma 6, GNOME 46, Linux kernel 6.9
By 14, 18 May 2024 at 9:13 pm UTC Likes: 1

If you love Manjaro, I'm not going to change your mind. Good for you. Be happy. Promote it even.

I moved on because there were small differences between my kids' Manjaro systems and my Arch system, and I got fed up. I wanted to be able to expect my configuration actions to have the same results (like script functionality and software versions). Additionally, avoiding a "major upgrade" as is described here is the exact reason I am on a rolling release, so Manjaro's user experience does not jive with me. It's like a rounded step release instead of rolling.

SteamOS 3.6.3 Preview for Steam Deck up, plus a new stable Steam Client Update for all

Quoting: syxbitAny idea on how the beta is going? I know the 3.5 update took a super long time to go to the stable channel. Hopefully OS updates go faster in the future.

Yes, I am really hoping the Steam Family changes get pushed to Stable soon. I recently bought my two children and my wife a Deck each and the new family mode works superbly. They're sharing my library happily and it's led to ongoing purchases for them as we get into multiplayer games that need a licence each, and the kids send me purchase requests when they find titles they want to pickup that suit their tastes.

Proton Experimental improves Halo Infinite, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and more
By F.Ultra, 18 May 2024 at 7:31 pm UTC

Quoting: CatKiller
QuotePlus they're also now limiting the CPU cores seen by Call of Juarez: Gunslinger as well to make it playable on high core-count CPUs. They did the same fix for Command & Conquer and The Covert Operations in a previous Experimental update.

It's weird that this keeps cropping up as an issue. High core-count machines have been around for quite a while now, and dev machines tend to have more cores than gaming machines, so you'd think that this was the kind of thing that would be spotted and fixed by game devs themselves.

I don't see how the game devs would be on especially powerful machines, Ubisoft and EA is probably handing out the bare minimum they can get away with.

Anyway the game is from 2013 and while that is only 11 years ago the best selling CPU that year was a dual core and the highest core count on a top 10 list for 2013 is a quad core so I find it perfectly understandable that the game isn't optimized for 32+ core machines (the imposed new limit in proton for this game is 31 cores). Also games takes years to develop so whatever machines the devs used they bought much earlier than 2013.

Quoting: shadow1w2Weird I was playing Gunslinger last year, though it seems I used GE-Proton instead which I tend to hop over to if a game even twitches for a second but nice to see the old game getting some attention officially.

The new limit is 31 cores so perhaps you have fewer than 32 :)

it's not a common issue but it happens for some people in some games (not just this one)

the workaround is forcing the use of "steam linux runtimes" as a compatibility layer

this avoids steam defaulting to download the windows versionwhen it's being stubborn

Fired up the WRC Generations game today. Thatone has gotten quite a few patches since i last played... nvidia reflex stuff is also added which is nice. So i guess i can play this then to satisfy my WRC needs

needs WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xinput1_3=n" to work though

And it spams my logitech G920 with the FFB commands that will get delayed. Workaround is to use ffbtools from berarama with:
ffbwrap --throttling --throttling-time 16 /dev/input/by-id/usb-Logitech_G920_Driving_Force_Racing_Wheel_for_Xbox_One_0000c58d7f6b6a4c-event-joystick -- %command%

Feels pretty good and yeah no bullshit kernel level anticheat on thisone :)

Grow Linux so that it's too big a market for anyone to decide to just ignore. That's it; that's the only solution.

What are some solutions to anti-cheat on
Linux?

For users that purchased these titles that were playable on their computers at time of purchase, this also causes me to avoid such companies.

(By comparison,
can't they run games in VMs, on Gamestreaming services?)

Though Linux users shouldn't settle for it,

Is "Offline mode only" an option?

Quoting: twinsonianThe anti-cheat these companies are putting in has nothing to do with cheating for the most part. Right now with companies, reaching for maximum profits to keep shareholders happy they need creative revenue streams, micro transactions and predatory practices are pretty obvious. They are only good for short term cash grabs, but continue to hurt consumer trust with the companies.

This is where the anti-cheat comes in. They now have a kernel level software running on consumer machines. What better way to collect whatever data they want to collect when they want to collect it. Having full access at kernel level opens up huge revenue. If you look at all the companies that I’ve had data breaches, in the last decade, including Microsoft, this should worry consumers in a big way.

Right now there might be disagreements about how much data they collect and when they collect it but a precedent has been set, and people are giving companies more than Microsoft dystopian levels of access to their personal machines. All in the name of stopping cheating. And people really believe this, what a joke.
VERY well-put. Unfortunately, gamers are usually not that great at organising against these sorts of things, and are typically perfectly accepting of it as long as they get XYZ Thing that they personally want, wider consequences be damned. Until some massive breaches occur and put people in actual danger, most folks just aren't going to care, which drives me mad, because it's their blind acceptance of it in the first place that causes problems for everyone.

Quoting: mAdCraZyaJSecondly, why can’t they give a launch option to disable anti cheat and thus disabling multiplayer. At least the rest of the game will be usable then.
The sad fact is, they don't have any reason to care - they've already got your money.

I have to ask - what do you do with the cards ?
Sell them for profit ? Do they make your profile look better ?

Soulstone Survivors has a new character that looks suspiciously from Deep Rock Galactic
By Ehvis, 18 May 2024 at 10:04 am UTC Likes: 2

Haven't unlocked this character yet, but the game is pretty good. It has some weird aspects to it though. You can level until complete utter chaos fills the entire screen because you can just hop into the endless portal and continue. You will eventually die though because the enemies seem to go up quicker and you'll fall victim to AOE attacks that you can't see coming in the chaos.

If you manage to get a good amount of defence going you might actually cheat death. In one run I became nearly impervious due to an interesting combination of effects that negated almost all damage. In that case, you'll run into the exponential boss health problem. By the time bosses get to 50-60 billion health, it would take about 10 minutes to trickle them down. Did one run like that, but now I take the exit before I get there since there really is no benefit in going through that.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualI mostly play multiplayer games, and it's sad to see ever fewer are possible to play through Proton due to anti-cheat.
I can see this being a really big problem for some gamers.....

Thankfully im not affected that much at all....... I only play single player games....... So my options are way more open...... And that includes the wonderful world of emulation......

Ive almost completely dipped out on modern gaming...... The "Games as a service" trend is VERY anti consumer and I really want no part of it......

Im glad there are many non "games as a service" indies as well as older games ive never played that I can sink my teeth into......

As for multiplayer gamers such as yourself this really sucks....... I hope the tide turns for you guys soon.......

I do fear it will take a world wide video game crash for that to happen........ Hope im wrong though and it turns sooner than that for you........

This really sucks. Game where you dont even compete online at the same time, but driving agains the clock, basically just leaderboards. This makes really no sense to add this crap to it. I should have known to not buy EA stuff though. I was hesitant at first cause it already had that denuvo trash, but i like rally games so i went hype mode and bought it anyway. Have 100+ hours in this game, i guess thats the end. Will try to ask for refund then i guess.
Never buy EA titles again...

updated my review of this game also.

Ghost of Tsushima single-player only on Steam Deck due to PlayStation Network features
By EduAAA, 18 May 2024 at 4:51 am UTC

This game has the same flaw The Witcher 3 has, if you like to explore and do everyquest you get overleveled... even open world games that tell a story need to care about that, in the end I guess those players that skip the intro, and go forward without reeding because that's too much effort apparently, play the best way.

Caves of Qud gets a huge new Beta released with the big UI redesign
By EduAAA, 18 May 2024 at 4:40 am UTC

I like the idea of building a base or explore a always randomized world, rpg, turn-based but without needing to read a manual, guides, and still have no idea the fk you doing cuz they use graphics you can find artistic, but other don't understand shit, with an UI that seems it's done extremely difficult on purpose, also makes it impossible to play with a controller even on steam deck.

Zomboid could be the game I'd like to play but isn't turn based and it's always changing graphic engine, I'm waiting to play a version that has a bit of a plot, a purpose, not just surviving because yes with out any kind of quest etc...

A better example of a game I like kind of roguelike is Battle of brothers but bigger, with quests not just contracts, npcs you can interact, open world, crafting game, class bassed, turn bassed, controller friendly if possible and newbye friendly, it can be hard but at least I have to know tf is happening, how I failed. ETC

I've played Neo scavenger, survivalist but it's too clunky, I always end finding the same games. If you can share your knowledge, oh, it has to be single player.

Sheltered, like that game, it could be done much better and the second is worst they say, with more content, Stay of decay kind of the same. "Guess I'll blow my brains, but first I'm gonna get drunk"

They very generous, free game, but when you check let's see hmm, it's not the full game, it's a way to make people buy must have dlcs unless you wanna play a demo.

No one gives anything for free, not even Epig store, thanks to Tecent I guess they made an easy way to know what not to buy till it's 5€ and I wonder why those games that oh, lost millions and their reputation, take for example Metro saga, their games lost their value so much you can buy entire saga for what, 8€? those who received the bribe from tencent don't care they happy with their whores and their blow, or maybe they blown already their brains, cuz sooner than later they gonna see money is not what you need, the thing is all team behind those games, (that's many people working for living with a contract for a normal pay, they have to keep working every day, despite what epig sais mixing developers with publishers, well I think they were not so happy to see their work getting dust on Epig, but life is unfair.

Well, we can't say this is surprising since they already done this with other titles and before you know it, a majority of their newer games will have this going forward. It's too bad though because they're just leaving money on the table for those that want to play on it Linux/Steam Deck.

I guess Geforce Now is the way to go to play some of these EA games I bought that have this crappy anticheat implemented.
