About:
QuoteIntro:
Before being imprisoned for eternity, Mephistopheles, the Lord of Darkness, put his sinister knowledge into several tomes which were scattered across the land. Many wicked souls were corrupted by the Devil and spent their lives searching for the wretched Tomes of Mephistopheles, to gain the knowledge of their unholy power. It has been foretold that the beholder of the Tomes will possess the greatest power known to mankind and will rule the world, but will corrupt it and leave it in ruins. The secret society known as the Deputies of Uriel dispatched its most skillful members to find the Tomes and destroy them at any cost. Will you fulfill your duty or succumb to the corruption of the Dark Lord ?

Description:
Tomes of Mephistopheles is a first-person
action-RPG dungeon crawler. With its fast-paced fluid combat, a multitude of medieval and magical weapons, an in-depth custom spell system, and randomly generated persistent worlds, ToM is a pinnacle of the genre.
Seeking the sinister Tomes, you will forge a path through the dungeons using anything that becomes available to you, while attaining skill and power along the way by exploring, questing, and crafting unique equipment and tailoring spells for yourself.

Features:
Crawl through vast, procedurally generated dungeons and overworlds.
Use explosives or other means to create your own path through a destructible world.

Quoting: "motorsep, post: 3464"It's not fare for Desura to get their huge share for not providing PR and advertising at least in the same scope Steam does.

Once ToM will get autopatching, how are you going to justify having games on Desura?

Well if you price the game higher on desura why do you care that they are gettig a share? Especially if its a consious choice by your customers. You have nothing to loose by selling in on Desura as well, and might even get quiet a few customers you would not otherwise have gotten. Once your game auto-updates mantaining the desura version will be even less work.

That's exactly opposite of taking care of the customers by raising the price just to make up for Desura's share :P

Let's not forget that Linux users made up only 2% of our paid customers for Steel Storm and many, many times I've been asked to have Steel Storm as standalone download.

It is not if its what (potential) customers are asking for. Its your choice obviously, but you can only gain sales from added distribution channels, and it doesnt seem to be much work to support it.
Why not give your customer the choice where to buy the game?

I for one would really appreciate it.

So I shall put ToM on Desura at $30 for alpha-funding :D

Well, why not $13 then? You can say right on your Desura page that it's cheaper if you buy direct instead. I think a lot of people would buy it on Desura anyway, just because of the added value:

1. It lets me download (and re-download) my games from any of my PCs. This is a big advantage.
2. It manages all games in one place, and I don't have to install any system packages (no root access for proprietary games). This is a very big advantage (to me).
3. Easy updating of games. This is a big Advantage. Some games auto-update, and thats fine too.
4. Friend list. This is not really useful now, but I think the plan is to create something like on Steam, PSN, or Xbox Live. It's a nice way to arrange to play a game with friends, instead of random strangers on the server.

Because of those reasons, I usually only buy games on Desura now. I think I only bought 2 non-Desura games since it has been released. If ToM turns out as good as it looks, I will buy it whether or not it's on Desura, but I hope that it will be.

Just to clarify things, when I said:
QuoteI'm waiting for the Desura release. It's just a simple matter of time, really.

I meant that:
"I use Desura because I don't have free time to update all my games independently".
not:
"It's only a matter of time before ToM comes to Desura".

Couldn't agree more...

ohh damn and i bought it outside of desura:(
i also love that all my games are in the same place..and desura is really good at it. keeping my games up to date and at the same place.
motorsep Feb 22, 2012
You guys seriously got spoiled with downloading/deleting/re-downloading games :/
It cost money for bandwidth to the provider (whether it's Desura or KiA). Steam has nothing to worry about because they are CDN provider themselves. So #1 is invalid reason.

#2 - our games have no dependencies that don't come with the distro. You can play our games on default installation of any distro.

#3 - I highly doubt you have 100 games that needs constant updating on Linux. Download patch, extract it and bam! you are good to go..

#4 - DarkPlaces doesn't support neither Steamwork nor Desura API (which doesn't work anyway). So friend list is useless with our games.

I am not gonna argue with Desura being useful and comfortable to use. But I still don't understand how can they charge same fee as Steam without providing same kind of profitable service.

If you want all of your games in the same place, create folder "games" and have all your games there :) Old school trick ;)

Anyhow, we will do alpha funding on Desura and the game will cost $25 (almost as it's final release price, which will be in the area of $30+). So if you are really crazy about Desura and want to support the game, you are welcome to buy it on Desura for $25.
Hamish Feb 22, 2012
May I make a small observation - if you want more games on Linux, please don't heckle developers.

Quoting: "rioninja, post: 3489, member: 147"...

If you will keep the version on Desura updated, then I will pay it.
But why is it so much more expensive than the direct price? It sounds like you are trying to kill Desura sales. Why not charge $10 + Desura's fee? I think that's fair.

But either way, I like your games and will pay the $25.

I agree with everything riotninja said.

I would also buy it for 25$, but I also think that 10$ +30%(?) would be more fair.
