Time to stop being excited (GOG not supporting Linux)

By Anon - | Views: 16,841
So, one of GOG employees just commented on the Linux support wish, with this to say:

QuoteWe've seen a lot more of you guys voting on this wish recently and I thought it was only fair for me to update you. Linux is a great platform, and we love how much passion you guys are showing for it here on our wishlist. We definitely know that it's one of the top things our community wants from us, but it's also really difficult to bring the GOG.com level of support and ease-of-use to the wide variety of distros that are commonly used by Linux users. If we're able to bring GOG.com games to Linux--and we're constantly evaluating ways that we can do this--we want to make sure that we're doing it the GOG.com way: simple, easy, and it "just works." I'm not telling you guys to give up hope--we know how much you want this--but what I am saying is that this is harder to support than it might seem initially, and we're not ready to move to support Linux officially just yet.

So, the announcement on the 18th will be probably disappointing for most of us. Unless they're just doing one of their bad PR stunts here.

Quoting: "Vadi7, post: 5831"And the disappointment was confirmed. Ideals they stand by my ass. You can't really talk about DRM-free and Mac in the same sentence, now can you?

I lol'd, even though that sentiment is a tad too bitter. ;)

Maybe, but the reason I started using their service was their stance on DRM (plus bonuses, I just love the soundtracks). What they do now, is choose to support the smallest community on their site (iOS and Android users are there in larger numbers, albeit a bit overlapping), when the second biggest (Linux) after Windows has been active in supporting them. I mean looking at the forums and the thread about this, many of those saying their happy with GOG expanding but disappointed in it not being Linux at over 500 posts in the forums!

I guess this was partially selfish, but I just hoped they would keep with their DRM-free stance and not support an OS like that, and instead aim for Android and Linux. Perhaps they require much more work, since Macs are easier to support - not much hardware or software versions - but the fact that they still only say that 'it's too hard' and blame it on the number of distros is well, disappointing and repetitive now. After all, by targeting Debian, all Debian-based distros will just work, and then there's just SUSE and Fedora and it's solved, with a .tar for all others. Or just the installer they used in the latest Humble Bundle that can tell what packaging system is used and even register the package with it. And if they bundled all their libs, it would definitely work fine.

The same is valid for Windows, if you want to go down that particular path. The games are still DRM-free (mostly).
Anyway, no surprise, and their Interplay deal is still sweet.

Funny, just got Redneck Rampage from my local thrift store...

EDIT: Wait... Shogo? Interplay? Am I missing something?

Giants: Citizen Kabuto, that is one wacky game, the "I am your father" part still make my laugh :)
