A Year Ago Today Valve Released Steam For Linux

By - | Views: 11,257
Wow has it been a year already? A year ago today Valve released the Linux version of Steam to everyone. Removing the beta tag on the client and having the first big Linux sale.

A lot has changed since then hasn't it? We have had SteamOS, Steam Machines, Steam Controllers and wow masses of games have pushed out Linux builds.

I still never thought I would see the day that we would have Steam on Linux. I thought we were lucky that Desura even looked our way with our small market-share.

We have a lot to look forward to this year with the expected arrival of masses more games from indies, big-name publishers and the raft of Kickstarters due to be completed this year.

I don't think Steam Machines with SteamOS are a do-or-die deal for Linux, I think Linux on its own will continue to be used by more and more people, the true reign of Microsoft is ending in my eyes especially as more developers look to Linux and OpenGL.

I am truly thankful for Valve's Linux push.

How do you feel after a whole year? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Thank you, Liam, for covering it all, and thank you, Valve, for making Linux an ever more relevant platform for PC gaming. The future looks bright!

Dota2, L4D2, Metro: Last Night, Brutal Legend, and so many other titles, and right now many of us(Including me) complying that CS:GO and Portal 2 is being delayed for a long time :P
I wish SteamOS and Steam Machines to be really successful so more developers to be interested bringing their games to Linux. I also wish for better graphics Drivers so performance on Linux would finally reach the Windows one's.:><:

Just one year ago I would never have dreamed to have so many games installed on my GNU/Linux system. I am so happy things are changing!
Thank you Liam for keeping us always updated!

Yes Happy Birthday!

In the world, there is the 1% of privileged people, and in the Gaming world there is now a whooping 1.6% of privileged gamers.

Joke aside, I am amazed at the progress made in a few months.

Thanks for maintaining this website. With the exception of a few games like 0AD, Amnesia, I used to only consider gaming on Windows before the Humble Bundles, then DESURA (Thanks Desura) and then some time later Steam, so this website was completely under my radar until quite recently.

One thing I would like to see that would finalise the dream, with a little pink bow, is GOG finally offering the Linux binaries, and / or giving us a selection of dosbox games ready packaged.

Oh, and maybe finally bring us Civ 5 and Total War Rome 2.

As far as I know Total War Rome II is officially confirmed, so what about Civ 5?
I think the only hints for a linux port were the (false) listing on Amazon and Valve's footage for the Steam Controller, or is there anything else? I'd be really excited about that :)

Well, it's out for Mac OS too which should certainly make a port easier. It's all just speculation, though.

I had expected Portal 2 by now, but I certainly have enough games on Steam to keep me busy! I predict that, in a year, we'll be counting more and more **** games for Linux.
