GOL’s first monthly hardware survey EDIT

By - | Views: 56,857
Gaming on Linux has been showing Steam Hardware Survey for a while now, but with the data being quite broad and specific only to Steam, we decided to make our own Linux-specific survey. This should give us an idea of metrics within Linux gaming, such as the percentage of users who use Wine, dual boot or what their favourite game retailer is.

The idea is to have the survey running monthly, and then publish the stats at the end of the month alongside Steam Hardware Survey, hopefully shedding some light on a few things which still remain a mystery and over time give an idea of how things evolve. Maybe in the future this may also provide some interesting data to studios looking to make/port games for Linux as well.

The survey is anonymous and is just intended to be a bit of fun, so please don’t try and take it 100 times to boost the stats for your favourite distro or retailer - that would do a great disservice to all of us who looking for some interesting and accurate data. If you have any suggestions on changing the questions or wording of the questions, feel free to write them on here (but bear in mind that SurveyMonkey has a limit of 10 questions for free users) and we may revise the survey next month.

Please feel free to take the survey and share it with anyone who games on Linux - the bigger the sample, the better the data we will have.

EDIT: SurveyMonkey have decided to reveal only after publishing the survey that a free account only allows a maximum sample of 100 people. For this month only, I'll pay the fee, but that still means that the sample is capped at 1000 (and at this rate, it looks like it may go over 1000) so the survey will end once that number is reached. If anyone knows of any free survey tools we can use which don't have sample caps, let me know in the comments or send me a PM so we can do next month's survey on a different site. After many years of floating through space on the back of a missile, following a successful career in beating people up for not playing Sega Saturn, the missile returned to earth. Upon returning, I discovered to my dismay that the once great console had been discontinued and Sega had abandoned the fight to dominate the world through 32-bit graphical capabilities.

After spending some years breaking breeze blocks with my head for money and being mocked by strangers, I have found a new purpose: to beat up people for not playing on Linux.

I think it would be good to keep the questions the same for a while, so you can compare better

Why isn't Ubuntu listed as a distro?

Well it's been just over an hour since the survey was published, and there's been over 100 responses with some pretty interesting data...

Only snag is that the sneaky SurveyMonkey people have now decided to disclose that I require a premium account to see any results over the 100 respondents mark which means either the sample has to be capped at 100 or I have to pay £25 to get a maximum of 1000 respondents (or £300 for unlimited, which is crazy). I will consider doing it for this month since so many people have been kind enough to fill it out, but it looks like we'll need to find another way of doing this in future months. If not then I'll have to pull it and re-upload the whole thing with a free alternative.

Does anyone know of any free alternatives to SurveyMonkey? Any thoughts in general? Paying out £25 a month isn't really sustainable.

Quoting: neffoWhy isn't Ubuntu listed as a distro?

It is! It's Debian based. I just listed the main distro families to avoid having to do a massive list. I'll make that clearer in the next one :)

Done. So sad I had to answer 'no' to the first question, I decided to delate my windows partition next week end.

Also, hard to answer about the cpu & gpu, because my desktop got an intel CPU with an AMD gfx, and my HTPC got an AMD CPU with nVidia gfx :P

I'd say it was far enough separated from Debian these days to include it as an "Ubuntu-based" option instead.

I have been pure Linux for 12 years. No Windows computer is allowed in my house. At first i gave up gaming to use Linux, but now its nothing to worry about.

My purchases/month vary wildly, because some months I find a lot of stuff that seems interesting, other months there isn't anything I'm interested in, so I just did a rough estimate of how many games I have and how long I've been using Linux and gave the average.

Also, is it distro hopping when you use two different distros, but only those exact two?
