XCOM: Enemy Unknown was ported to Linux a little while ago, so if you really are strapped for cash it's your chance!
However those who do have money and haven't picked it up can get it 75% off right now on Steam to support the developers at least a little.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown - About the game
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will place you in control of a secret paramilitary organization called XCOM. As the XCOM commander, you will defend against a terrifying global alien invasion by managing resources, advancing technologies, and overseeing combat strategies and individual unit tactics.
The original XCOM is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made and has now been re-imagined by the strategy experts at Firaxis Games. XCOM: Enemy Unknown will expand on that legacy with an entirely new invasion story, enemies and technologies to fight aliens and defend Earth.
You will control the fate of the human race through researching alien technologies, creating and managing a fully operational base, planning combat missions and controlling soldier movement in battle.
Key Features
Strategy Evolved: XCOM: Enemy Unknown couples tactical turn-based gameplay with incredible action sequences and on-the-ground combat.
Strategic Base: Recruit, customize and grow unique soldiers and manage your personnel. Detect and intercept the alien threat as you build and expand your XCOM headquarters.
Tactical Combat: Direct soldier squads in turn-based ground battles and deploy air units such as the Interceptor and Skyranger.
Worldwide Threat: Combat spans the globe as the XCOM team engages in over 70 unique missions, interacting and negotiating with governments around the world.

I wonder how they get profit from giving away the game. They almost certainly use your email/info/games you select and sell it to whomever is interested :P Total speculation on my part, I don't mean to slander them. Just as a general rule on the internet is that if it's free, then you're buying it with your personal information :P

Some companies have gotten really sneaky with their privacy policies recently, they state clearly they won't SHARE your details, but unless they also include the word SELL you can be pretty sure that's what they're going to do with your details, sell them on I mean.

What Misanthe said and also they also might be doing it as a loss leader, to attract your attention to the fact Enemy Within has been launched as well. looking at this site http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70978/xcom-enemy-unknown/ they sold just over half a million copies worldwide. That should cover the dev costs, everything else from there on is a tiny profit on late sales. Enemy Within is likely to only interest those who played Unknown, therefore widen the playerbase of the first game to boost the sales of the second.

Despite my comment, I still think it's a pretty good deal :) You also don't need to use an identifying or work email or anything, so there's really not a whole lot of risk. If I didn't already have it, I totally would have jumped on that deal :)

Greenman Gaming want you to register an account and loads of people are going to receive their newsletters. Of course you can click that away but I don't know how many will do that.
What is this Playfire thing i also got registered to? Never heard of it but it looks like some sort of client and social network for gamers. Is it some sort of Steam client for GMG?
Its seems like a promotion for GMG and Playfire. Just register, get your key and be happy with it. :)

I ignore some emails telling me that I'm playing games (as though I didn't know) for a month, and I get a free game.
I get email I have to ignore all the time, and at least this time I know when I can make them end :\
