Postal 2 No Longer Being Worked On By Icculus, RWS Taking It In-house

I'm a bit late on actually covering this, but any fans of Postal 2 will know that the Linux version is rather far behind Windows in terms of updates due to how busy Icculus is, so RunningWithScissors has taken it in-house.

One day recently I got this out of the blue tweet from RWS:

@gamingonlinux Apologize to your readership for the delays in the updates. Taken it in house now, hoping thing will progress faster.

RunningWithScissors (@RWSPOSTAL) October 30, 2014

RWS we very much appreciate you keeping us informed!

What are we missing?

Well Postal 2 was updated a lot in the past year, and sadly not much (if any) of it has made it's way to Linux. We are missing things like steam cloud, steam workshop, and absolutely tons of new content.

We don't have the Apocalypse weekend mod integrated into the game, we don't have all the lovely new vocal content, dismemberment was put into the entire game, missing new weapons, and the list goes on. That's a lot we don't have.

So, here's to hoping now that RWS has finally taken it in-house we will see all the new features, fixes and expansions that Windows Postal 2 players have been getting. We hope when they get this sorted they can work from one code-base and not rely on others to port for them so we don't end up waiting again.

Official About
Live a week in the life of "The Postal Dude"; a hapless everyman just trying to check off some chores. Buying milk, returning an overdue library book, getting Gary Coleman's autograph, what could possibly go wrong?

Blast, chop and piss your way through a freakshow of American caricatures in this darkly humorous first-person adventure. Meet Krotchy: the toy mascot gone bad, visit your Uncle Dave at his besieged religious cult compound and battle sewer-dwelling Taliban when you least expect them! Endure the sphincter-clenching challenge of cannibal rednecks, corrupt cops and berserker elephants. Accompanied by Champ, the Dude's semi-loyal pitbull, battle your way through open environments populated with amazingly unpredictable AI. Utilize an arsenal of weapons ranging from a humble shovel to a uniquely hilarious rocket launcher.

You can buy Postal 2 from their Humble Store Widget and get it cross-platform with a Steam key too. The game does work fine, but it just misses tons of content added over the last year or so. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Also missing are achievements on Linux and Mac versions.

A little confusing since Ryan Gordon added it to "Doing" on his Trello page in September...

Still, in many ways this is the best move - icculus is way overburdened at the moment and by doing this themselves RWS is in many ways just demonstrating their increased maturity as an Indie developer. Considering that the next game they do whatever it is will likely be built on UE4 anyway should also help matters greatly in this regard.

Considering this has been basically ready to go since May though, I will be very glad when the updates do finally arrive on our own fine, fair shores.

I think icculus should stop new projects and focus on fixing the ones than already exist, how is possible than Goat simulator still not works at all? This article just prove that point.

Wait...Portal 2 is being updated? After over ten years!?! I haven't played this game since grade school, and it still gets content? Talk about LTS.

It's good that they took it in-house, but... Because Ryan's busy? Really? Maybe it's just me, but I think there's more to it than that.

Ryan seems to be quite anti-GamerGate, judging by his tweets.
RWS on the other hand, is very pro-GamerGate.

It's business and all, but I'd be hard-pressed to not at least consider this as being a huge factor. It is suspicious timing, if you ask me. Ryan has been busy since Loki disbanded...

I had the sane thought about the gamersgate stuff which forced me to unfollow RWS.

I asked Ryan about it, but he said he didn't know RWS supported them and he said he hopes they change their minds.

It seems Icculus is just as puzzled about this as you are:

Even though GamerGate is for the most part a bunch of sexist and hate filled garbage, I can actually understand the stance RWS has taken on it; in their case they have indeed suffered unfair prejudice from the media for years and have even seen the review scores for their games altered due to political convenience and unfair pressure. I can see perfectly well why they would take the stance they do, even if it is unfortunate that the aspersions GamerGate usually casts are almost always in the wrong direction.

Even with all of this being accepted though, Vince Desi and the rest of RWS are not the sort of people that would end a long standing relationship over a political difference, and Ryan is indeed actually far busier than he has ever been before; work for him has been growing steadily ever since the first Humble Indie Bundle, never mind the the arrival of Steam, GOG.com, and everything else later on. I would strongly suggest we do not read too much into this.
