Source Engine 2, Steam Link And More Announced At GDC

This is what we have been waiting for, Valve sent out official word about a number of things! These include Source 2, Steam Link and more.

Steam Link
tagline-image
The first bit of news is a new device called a “Steam Link”, and it’s a $50 streaming box to plug into your TV. Useful for those of us not wanting to buy an entire Steam Machine, or having the money to do so.

It had a page up on the Steam store which was removed, but luckily there is the google history which captured the page.

QuoteSteam Link is designed to take advantage of the PC horsepower you already have in your home, with In-Home Streaming. If you have a gaming PC and a fast home network, Steam Link may be the right choice for your living room.

Source Engine 2
It has been officially announced, and with a focus on user generated content. It will be free to content developers, but they haven’t said how free, or if there will be any kind of royalties needed like with Unreal Engine.
It will support the new Vulkan API, as Valve are saying it's a key part of Steam Machines success.

Steam Controller
It will be about $50, and available in the US in November, no word on the rest of the world yet. They will announce it for the rest of us closer to launch.

Steam Machines
Also launching in November, and machines from Alienware and Falcon Northwest will be shown off at GDC. They will be priced alongside the current consoles, but offer higher performance.

Lighthouse
Valve have announced that the tracking system for use with their VR headset can be integrated into lots of hardware, and it will be freely available to hardware manufacturers to place into their devices, so your next TV could have tracking built-in for SteamVR.

Thanks to SteamDB for posting it, as Valve noted to us we are on their press lists, but sadly we were forgotten about this time around, we have emailed Doug and Gabe at Valve again to ensure we are on it.

I was really hoping the controller would be available a lot earlier than that, but it does make sense to do a near-holiday release. We will be buying a Steam Controller and a Steam Link as soon as they are available to give our thoughts on them.

I already have a gaming rig so I couldn't see the point of a steam machine. However this steam link is something I would buy.

Quoting: LordpkappaDo you think that with Vulkan Api we'll have the same performance of DX12 or more?

Yes definitely, I think the two are very similar, in fact DX12 was inspired somewhat on Mantle as well I think. Now that there's a level playing field, I think we will start seeing Linux beating Windows performance wise across the board. Very exciting times...

Hope so, but i'm not so confident at the moment, DX12 seems to be an excelent API, Vulkan with similar performance will be great also to uniform the market.

So does this Steam Link run SteamOS too?

Source Engine 2 is pretty exciting really, means we could get some kind of sequel from Valve or even a completely new game. Personally, I'd hope for either Portal 3 or something new that isn't multiplayer.

probably the same or little to no difference in any way, they both leverage same features. you can't make hw going faster than it is when it is controlled with low level access

main advantage is that Vulkan is supporting everything, while DX12 is only supporting MS platforms.

I'm guessing some even more stripped down Debian.

SteamOS was already announced, you can't re-announce it ;)

I know it's been announced and such, but didn't they also say they wanted to make a feature built into steamos for streaming video from say "Netflix and Hulu", i mean i know we can already do that in a normal install of linux, and also through the browser on the steamOS, but it being part of the actual big picture mode. Also they did make a Music player for it, but didn't they mention they wanted to integrate spotify, and a few other internet radio providers?

News on this stuff would of been nice. I guess time will tell now.

Quoting: maodzedunI'm plenty pissed at Valve for holding the controller YET AGAIN. They promised us to have it for sure by the end of this month. The only reason we've not getting it is because somebody said: "Hey let's sell a glorified antenna for 50 bucks, but hold the controller for 7 more months or nobody would actually bother to buy the Steam Link". This is bullshit.

What? Valve never said we would have the controller at the end of this month. Steam Link probably wont be released until November either.

You really need to calm down.
I've been planning on building a Steam Machine for my living room and now I have a date in mind to finalize it, November. I hope this controller is worth the wait.

The Steam Uplink thing smells suspiciously like a "we weren't serious about moving to Linux, so here's a router so you can keep using Windows on your real machine but stream stuff to your tv". A stopgap, basically, until tv's become non-stupid and actually allow you to stream stuff to them as part of their design, like they should already be doing.

Hopefully I'm wrong, and it's just a backwards-compatible layer to ease people into a full SteamOS solution.

The controller will be amazing, I can't wait.

The odd thing is, wouldn't the Steam Link be a lot more useful with the controller? As things stand, you got a thing that will push PC games to your TV, but nothing that lets you play PC games while in front of your TV, no?
(I'm not so incensed about the delay as such. Whatever, it's ready when it's ready. Although missing this date would lose another Christmas window. A spring launch, not so awesome so whatever, if they can use the time to get their supply ducks in a row and co-ordinate well with the Steam Machine producers November is fine)
