As usual thanks to SteamDB it looks like Arma 3 could be heading to Linux. Arma 3 is a massive military sandbox from Bohemia Interactive and I am sure it will excite a lot of people.

This is by no means confirmed, remember content from SteamDB can always be an accident, or simple internal tests, but it's still exciting. I have personally emailed Bohemia Interactive for comments, and I will be sure to update you if they say anything to us.

On the SteamDB history for Arma 3 is this:

Quoting: aaannzThis is the only game (and trying out Kingdom Come alpha) for which I restart to Win, so I'm all for it. But I highly doubt they will make Linux version. They invested heavily into their DX11 based renderer and AFAIK removed OpenGL backend they once had in A2. Maybe if Valve is pushing them Vulcan way...

Similary here (I restart to Win for Arma 2)

But I am not sure about this port, read this:

Quoting: fishxzi hope its not. the performance in bioshock was terrible compared to windows. i refuse such "ports"!

what? the performance is amazing for a wrapper.

Yes, the performance is amazing - for a wrapper.

Quoting: mr-eggat this point Eon is so good that im not bothered if older pre 2014 titles are ported using a wrapper. It gets the games over and as people have more and more GPU power to spare the 10 - 15fps difference isn’t noticeable on all but the most extreme 4k setups where every fps counts

Yes, Eon is so good that old games can be wrapped with it so we get a chance to play them at all. Games older than Bishock probably will run fine on average modern hardware.

But...

On my GTX660, Bishock Infinite has got breaks of say half a second when loading new parts of a scene I'm walking through, which breaks immersion for me. I did try the tips of the 2K, to no avail. It did much better on the very same PC when I still used Windows.

Such wrappers must not become the standard way of "porting" games to Linux.

Hmm weird, I have a GTX660 but I don't get anything like that. I have a relatively recent Haswell motherboard + CPU though, that might make the difference...

That would be awesome, even more so if they finally decided to let you jump in the game. I remember the first Arma didn't believe in the ability to jump, kind of irritating to me.

I dual boot mostly for ARMA III, having it on Linux would let me finally purge my PC from Windows partition :D

Darem - that was for good reason, you try jumping in real life while wearing body armour (not a kevlar vest, but the full deal, ceramic plates and all). Arma is about realism, and bunny hopping round a battlefield is about as farm from realism as it's possible to get. In fact, short of athletes I can't think of many scenarios where people jump in real life ...

Mantling and vaulting are different, and if I'm remembering rightly recent versions of Arma allow both.

In the steamdb, the Branch tools_experiment has the description "Secret Project ;)". That sounds like an Aspyr type comment if you ask me...

... like all those ports of big games before did!
Erm...

BTW, when Steam for Linux went public, we had 2% of Linux users, now it's 1. :-(
