If you have passed over RUNNING WITH RIFLES before, you shouldn’t have. The game is a real blast, and it has now left early access.

Check out the new trailer:

Hope to see some of you playing it! I had a real blast last time I played it, as it’s a good fun army combat game. Last time I played it, I found a jeep and nearly ran someone over before they jumped off a bridge, love it.

About the game (Official)
RUNNING WITH RIFLES is a top-down tactical shooter with open-world RPG elements.

In RWR, you join the ranks of an army as a common soldier, just like the thousands around you.

The open world approach lets you define your own path and story in the campaign. Push back the enemy with your comrades or go deep behind enemy lines to sabotage their efforts and loot valuable items.

Some thoughts
It’s one of the few games that I can’t really nitpick at too much, as it’s an absolute blast to play, and everything works as expected for me.

It did take me a moment to realise a few things, but it’s not a frustrating learning experience, as learning while you play in RWR seems to actually be quite enjoyable, and it’s rare for me to like that in a game. I would like it to have the option of telling me what to do, but it’s not completely essential as you pick it up quite quickly on your own.

There’s nothing like seeing one of my team shout “ROCKET” and see another die with “OMG ROCKET!”. The little bits of comedy are really quite fun.

The game is rammed full of drivable vehicles too, so here’s an obligatory shot of me living the dream driving my jeep:

And also a shot on myself and editor Samsai chilling in a boat:

What really surprised me is seeing the day and night cycle, and the ambient sounds that come with it. A solidly nice touch, and makes the game that little bit more interesting.

There’s absolutely loads in this game to love, from the different weapon selections, to running around a corner and getting blown up by an enemy tank. I later re-spawned and ran to the same spot where I saw the tank, only to see it wiggle around and a chat box popped up with “AH SO THAT’S THE CLUTCH!” and it then got blown up by another players RPG.

One thing that makes the online play so easy, is that you don’t need to register at all. You simply pop a username and password in, and away you go!

It does have a level up system based on kill count, as you rack up kills you gain more and more experience points. Dying does reduce your XP as well, so you do need to be careful. Stray bullets can be a nightmare, so be warned, and duck for cover trooper! I did initially think it was too hard to level up, but as Samsai pointed out, you really don't want a bunch of newbie griefers having access to the heavier weapons right away, and I agree.

Before I knew it an hour had already passed, and I enjoyed every death filled moment of it. I’ve put a lot more time into it previously, but I always forget how quickly time goes when you’re playing it.

Final Verdict: I don’t know what I’m doing half the time. I’m doing a lot of dying, and seeing a lot of “OMG GRENADE”, and I bloody LOVE it. I will be playing a lot more of this that's for sure.

Check out RUNNING WITH RIFLES on Steam now, or look on Desura, but I don’t know how up to date the Desura version is. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

It's a very nice game. In my opinion a good summary of it is that it does what some modern military shooters (like BF4) attempt to do, it just does it a lot better and from a top-down perspective.

I have an old version that I downloaded from the dev site back when it was free (as in beer) Ah it seems that was actually a demo. That was so long ago that I even had a different system :P Will wait for next spending spree then.

This is a phenomenal game. I've been following Running With Rifles for years and have owned it for a long time. It's worth noting that there's a very good demo on its website.

RwR is indeed best described as a 'top-down Battlefield', minus the destructible environments. I recommend to any top-down shooter fan, bar none!

The game IS a heck of a lot of fun!
Too bad the Desura version isn't up to date. :-(
I really enjoy playing the demo though.
