Triumph Studios has just released Age of Wonders v1.7, and with it comes a much anticipated feature in the form of user-created modding, including brand new units, heroes, classes, races and gameplay mods, along with a ton of stability fixes and balancing work. Combined with the existing mapping tools, comes the possibility to create total conversions and other niceties.

This big update comes with day-one Linux support for using mods, however the content creation tools are still Windows-only, with no promise of a Linux port whatsoever. It's a sad reality but this is still the consensus amongst developers, and as long as the sole promise of a better Linux gaming experience still relies on the hypothetical success of the Steam machines - i.e. a consumer-level gaming console, this is not going to change anytime soon.

In the meantime, let's enjoy ourselves with the first dozens of interesting mods already out now for Linux on the Steam Workshop, and I'm sure there will be loads of to come later on, thanks to Triumph Studios!

I have been greatly enjoying Age of Wonders III and I can't wait to get even more out of it.

Details about the patch can be found on the official website. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: JuliusYeah, not Heroes like at all. More like Civ5 with turn based tactics mode bolted on top.

It's a great game, but a civ5 like game maybe doesn't lend it self so well to a story based strategy game, which I assume most people will have bought AoW3 for.

In addition: maybe its just nostalgia, but the previous 3 parts seemed a bit more fun back then.
Strange, I don't feel like this at all. In fact I played a lot more Heroes 3 than Civ V so I can't really express myself on this point. But many features remind me of Heroes, including the various buildings/mines/lumber mills you can find in the map, the way quests are handled on the map, etc. Just my opinion.

I bet I can use the mod tools with wine. If so, no big drama at all. At least for me.

Sure, there are some similarities but while those are a mayor part of the game in the HoMM series (aka: exploring a map with your hero+group of units while gathering resources from such points on the map and following a story line), in AoW3 they are only relevant in the early game (kind of like ruins in Civ) and it quickly becomes a game of managing your cities and building up armies.
Some of the maps in the AoW3 campaign do play much like HoMM, but they are pretty much just quick fillers to advance the story, while the majority of play-time will be on large area domination maps that play very much like a round of Civ5. Edit: I realized this when I started to build roads and was magically terraforming the areas around my cities... something hard to imagine in a HoMM like game ;)

If you want to play a HoMM like game, Disciples III runs great via WINE.

I bought the game on Steam summer sale expecting it will be more like HoMM and less like Civ, but it turns out it's the other way around. I used to be a huge fan of the Civ games, but nowdays I just can't commit so much time and attention, so AoW3 just wastes away in my Steam library.

Has the performance (FPS) improved yet? It was terrible, unplayable when released.

I have no problem whatsoever on Core i7 4770 and GTX 660.

Performance is pretty much the same as on Windows with an Nvidia card. It is a relatively heavy game though, but not unusually so.

It's unfortunate that many games won't bring their mod tools to our platform. But let's be realistic: our market share is very low and the people who create mods are even fewer.
