A new video has surfaced of the Steam Controller being used with the motion controls, it's not a Linux game, but it looks very slick, and I will for sure be testing this out in games myself.

I wasn't really too fussed about it, but seeing this video has completely changed my mind about the motion controls in the controller. I'm even more excited to give it a try now, I just hope it works as well as it does in this Windows game, for Linux games.

If you have one available currently, try getting a video of this in a Linux game and we will give it a shout out. Otherwise you can wait for mine to arrive next month.

I'd do anything for MGS5 to be native!

Wow.
I played some Mario Kart on the Wii this weekend, but this looks way more responsive.
I didn't even know until recently the Steam Controller had such a feature...

Heck, that looks great!

Only rushing through the reviews, I totally must have missed that featured.
I'm impressed by the responsiveness, i.e. very low latency.
Everything else seems to be a matter of fine tuning.

And here is the problem. the slickness comes from what looks like big picture mode running faster on windows than on my Linux desktop (might be my machine ), running a Game on windows that people really like that’s not on Linux. People on windows are getting excited about the controller, big picture and can play many AAA games too..

But Not SteamOS.


Consoles and 'PC' have the titles. In many ways Valve should of left the revision of Big picture UI to SteamOS only or the ordering of controllers to be SteamOS ( Linux ) there is literally no brand separation here.

What is the exact reason for SteamOS, even im getting confused. It offers nothing over anything else ?

I don't understand what you mean. I just did pretty much the same thing as in the video but on Linux and with Bioshock Infinite. Works fine. Controller with gyro aiming works (I need more practice though...) BPM works mostly fine, I think it looks the same on all platforms, and it has occasional hiccups on all platforms. Valve are pushing out beta updates pretty regularly these days.

Are you saying Valve should have released the controller exclusively for SteamOS? They already said they aren't doing exclusives, and I for one think that's a good thing.

I tried that feature with my Steam Controller on Ubuntu while playing Blockstorm and Q.U.B.E for example and i must say it works and feels really, really, really, really, well!

One has to get used to it a little bit, but the performance is great with very low latency.

How do you think then they will persuade people to go on SteamOS? I wouldn't be even surprised, if SteamOS/Linux share still remains at around 1% even after Steam machines release. There must be something appealing for new users and Windows is having the best reason for most PC gamers to stay on it.

Valve needs something, a reason or something like a "killer game".

You must have a faster pc than me, when pressing the steam button on the 360 controller, entering and exiting big picture UI whilst in game I have some stutters whilst things load, its not as fluid as that for me. I have found the experience to have some minor input lag when switching tiles and even with vsync working perfectly there always seems to be that slight sluggishness, on that video it looked really rapid and smooth. Its not terrible,at all, but that video seemed to show it working really slick.

No im just venting my confusion here.. there are going to be many videos made by people who presumably will be showing off the controller /steam link stuff on a Windows PC using the same UI as Steam OS yet with games that the Steam machine owner will be scratching their head at .. look in their library, go to buy and then realise it isn’t available to them or worse be available but offer janky performance.

fallout 4 ? start citizen ? the next big FPS shooter .. its still going to take another 2 - 3 years to get the momentum going, in the meantime valve will continually update the windows client, not to mention the current growing trend in PC gaming is to use a large 4k TV at a desk not in the living room :/

Having said that, anything that brings those big titles to Linux is a plus. I still think valve should of rolled their own Linux desktop distro and integrated it tightly with their own DE, compositor + apps and their steam client with two boot up menus, one for desktop and one for big picture.

It's way more responsive than the SIXAXIS ever was! Works well in the Portal 2 recommended template, but I haven't yet nailed down a nice setup for DiRT Showdown (only messed around for 5-10 minutes though).

After seeing this, I'm sold on the controller now. It's strange that this feature wasn't advertised more, because it's a killer feature in my book.

I would be interested to know how well it works with Dirt Showdown?

I think Valve won't talk much about till till release and IGN and PC Gamer are idiots that wrote reviews of the controller based on something like two hours of play with main gripe: "not Xbox 360 controller". Btw don't get me wrong - I love my 360 gamepad but this is ridiculous.

So somewhat related: does the haptic feedback work on Linux? I don't really feel anything, even when set to high. I can hear it though, so I'm not sure if my thumb is just not picking it up. Or it might not be working properly. I don't really know. I've read great things about the feedback, so I'm a bit disappointed.

It does. It's worked for me perfectly in Ubuntu 15.04, Kubuntu 15.04 and SteamOS. It's completely different from a normal gamepad rumble though, much closer to what you get while typing on an Android phone's keyboard. It is quite light though, so can be missed in the heat of a game, but I've at least grown somewhat used to its feedback, enough to know which emulated button I'm on most of the time.

Yup, it works, but it's a lot trickier than using the stick! I've uploaded a controller setup that's a bit more nuanced that the one that was there already by "jorge", to allow for finer movements, but it still takes a lot of practice.
