This one is quite vague, but a new job posting may suggest that a Linux port of Elite: Dangerous isn't out of the question.

The job posting listed here states this:
QuoteAbility to write platform-independent code for deployment on Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and current generation consoles.

Usually, I would put this down to servers and not give it another thought. My interest here is specifically about deployment and mentioning Linux along with existing versions. They also have a totally seperate job listing related to Servers, so that has also boosted my interest in this.

Of course, I am speculating here, but it's fun to do now and then about bigger titles. It seems like a rather sought-after title too, with a single SteamOS/Linux post on the Steam forum having 29 pages of people talking about it.

About the game (Official)

In an age of galactic superpowers and interstellar war, every player’s story influences the unique connected gaming experience and handcrafted evolving narrative. Governments fall, battles are lost and won, and humanity’s frontier is reshaped, all by players’ actions.

I was put-off of Elite: Dangerous because of the scammy nature of their early access program (charging something like 4 times the price for the "privilege" of beta testing), and I'm not entirely sure I want to support the developers because of it.

You're right:

Well, that's what you get for basing an article on my wild speculations on reddit :-)

I wouldn't honestly expect it until after a PS4 release, which would give time for Vulkan/SteamOS etc to settle down a bit too.

Not sure I follow. What's scammy about beta access being for higher tiers? Lot of Kickstarter/crowdfunding projects do that. Later corresponding access was sold because they couldn't undersell their early backers, could they? Maybe it is just not worth to get beta access if it that expensive to you and not go all 'sour grapes' about that? Beta accounts got wiped anyway.

There's nothing scammy about that.

Yes, Playstation 4 version will definitely follow next year, it is just no brainer. As for Linux version they can revisit it when SteamOS gets a solid few percentage (2% - 5%) market share on Steam platform gaming. It's really in Valve hands atm. Company also have lots of stuff on their plate so I would prefer for them to flash out game before worry about Linux port.

It is oddly the only game that is listed in my library on Steam when I list SteamVR. Which I want so badly to play with this, it would have helped tremendously last time I was playing it, I could have seen out my windows to where I needed to shoot things!

I have a huge steam library that mostly goes unplayed because I hate booting into Windows.

I was a big fan of the old 8-bit Elite and its 16-bit successor Frontier, and I've played Oolite on Linux, but I'd love to see Elite on Linux, myself.
