The Atomic Game Engine is now open source and on github

More good news for developers, as the Atomic Game Engine is now open source under the MIT license. It's available on github right now.

What is it?
The Atomic Game Engine is a powerful game authoring solution which features cross platform editing and deployment to Windows, OSX, Android, iOS, Linux, and WebGL. Games and other applications can be written in JavaScript, TypeScript, C++, with C# scripting in the works.

Why did they go for the MIT license?
QuoteWe wanted to simplify Atomic’s licensing and reduce barriers as we work with our partners on the technology. There was thought put to “dual licensing” the code under separate commercial and GPL licenses. However, we believe the permissive MIT license brings the most value to Atomic technology end users, including us, THUNDERBEAST GAMES LLC

We also view the MIT as a modern software license being used to develop amazing technology across industries, in games alone we’re in great company with cocos2d-x, Godot, and of course Urho3D from which Atomic was initially forked in the fall of 2014!

Sounds like it might be a reasonably good game engine, and I can't wait to see what people are able to make with it.

That's funny, I literally looked at this engine two days ago for the first time and it had a price on it, haha! I think I was looking for a tutorial on how to use Urho3D which is what this one is based off of.

This engine looks quite polished. I'm building it now and going to check it out today.

Oooo does this mean the 3d module is now included in atomic? Or do you need the pro version still?

I don't see a purchase page at all and all of the wording on the front page makes it seem like there's only one version now, the FOSS version.

I can compile it, but it segfaults for some reason when I run it. I'm going to try it under Ubuntu.

I can't find a purchase page either, the video still says you need pro but I assume that's just a remnant.

Godot keeps crashing and freezing on me and they want you to use their in-house, non-universal scripting language ew. Maybe I'll give this a shot.

To be fair with Godot... while the scripting language is, technically, in-house, the language is, syntactically, Python. As such, I would argue that learning the Godot scripting language wouldn't be much different than learning, for instance, Javascript using JQuery. I would also go as far as to say, if you wrote javascript code for the Atomic engine, unless it's very universal code, it wouldn't quite work outside of the Atomic environment, just as code in Godot wouldn't work quite right outside of the Godot environment, unless it was very universal.

I don't have any issue with godot, I find it to be a very good tool for small 2d games, maybe not for EDIT: big 3d projects however
