Stellaris, the massive grand strategy game from Paradox is going through another update cycle and one little feature of the upcoming patch is the ability to accept refugees, but some people aren't happy about it.

It seems a delicate little flower on Twitter just couldn't take it anymore:

I wish I was making this up, but it's a real thing.

It was in response to this picture teased for the upcoming 1.5 patch release:

They have since added an option to only select accepting the same species.

The responses from Martin are perfect:

I love the way he ended that discussion. For those who don't know, Martin is the Game Director for Stellaris at Paradox. I already respected Paradox as a studio for their great games and great Linux support, but this is just icing on the cake.

They are having fun with it on their own forum too, as some more delicate petals just can't take it.

I think it's a fantastic feature to have and hopefully it will speed up my own planetary growth when other sides go to war, if I choose to accept them that is. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: Pangachatso what's the problem?
The problem is that certain political views have basically become a meme recently. Just like with any meme you have some people who are desperate to inject it into everything to show how much they "get it".
Some people just really want to inject their political alignment into the discussion every chance they get, just to show what side they're on even when the situation doesn't call for it.
Recently??? It has always been so. Just more public since the internet went mainstream.
Some people will always put their believes over the best arguments, so they will probably not learn.

To make everyone happy, devs could change the used words to "Accept/Do not accept". The current words are actual political slogans, in the EU at least.
The tooltip text could be changed too. Currently it's only point is to urge you to choose "Refugees Welcome" (and get used to it). Instead, the tooltip could give us info about how does this option affect our empire, that is, what is it's role in game mechanics. (Of course it has to have a positive and negative effect, otherwise it's not a game element.)

I dont think that people are upset because of "refugees" appear in the game. They are upset because of the words, references to the real world politics. Nowadays it's hard to find a TV channel, a newspaper or news site that is not biased towards this or that political view. And now videogames?

Please, developers, let your product be free of real-world politics!

If we want to see computer games as kind of art, being free of real politics will not and must not happen.
(If we don't, it still will not and must not happen.)

Meh, I don't see the problem either. Refugees can cause some problems, but also bring opportunities (think about Einstein, for example). I think that's a very good fit for a strategy game, especially in one where diplomacy has an important place.

It's a chicken/egg problem - why should someone stop using a word, because some missused it for his purpose?? Don't use the word "apple" because it's a trademark? The same goes for every other word political missused or misussed as a name for selling a product.

Xenophobic people always hiding behind such subtle but clear statements of their thinking and deny it afterwards.

"Refugees Welcome" is just a clear naming for that option - he first connected it political and gave away that it annoys him because he is against welcomeing refugees in the real world. In any other case he would have made a constructive proposal of renaming. But there is absulutly nothing wrong with "Refugees Welcome".

Just let asholes be asholes. Dont' spend to much time thinking why people exists who think the earth is flat, building a wall helps, calling themself "Reichsbürger", or the in the US popluar grouping "Creationists".
It's just as the humanity has smallpox, it will heal - eventually - sometime;)

Quoting: Segata SanshiroSince apparently all the content of Paradox's games reflect their views, then they must also be in favour of religious genocide, cultural assimilation, genocide of indigenous peoples, be followers of every major religion that has existed since the year ~800 concurrently, be fans of both Stalin and Hitler, colonialism, free trade, protectionism, etc.

Political correctness gone mad, something has to be done about these Marxist loons.

This motherfuckers ain't marxists.
I'm communist and i can't understand this level of stupidness about the SJWs.

Btw, it's funny how 2 or 3 comments from stupid people can make an ideology to be "loon", they don't represent us. This SJWs are just Soros puppets.

I feel you missed a joke here.

If I was you I would delete this post from the site. There are so many people who's family members and close friends were killed only in the last year, or raped, or raped and killed, who will find all this very offending.
I sincerely surprised that some publisher answer like that to people they expect to buy there's games talking about such a controversial thing.
This is also a huge black spot on this site and you should not write about such an incident. Except, of course, if you are hoping for financing from Soros and company. But I think that it's not a good idea.
