HEADLINER, a game where you control the news might come to Linux

By - | Views: 8,141

I came across HEADLINER [Steam] today while researching more potential Linux games, this adventure game sees you controlling the news to further your goals. It might come to Linux, as the developer is looking into it.

In a response to a post asking about a Mac version, the developer posted this (emphasis mine):

Aww sorry about that, I do plan on porting next. I did a "soft" test recently and it appeared to work fine :) The biggest hurdle (and why I wasn't able to get to it yet) is I don't own a Mac myself - but already had a friend offer to lend theirs. Hopefully I don't run into any unexpected issues.

Also hoping for a Linux and Mobile port down the line.

That wouldn't be much to go in, if not for their next reply:

I might take you on that! I just made an ubuntu boot USB. Now to figure out why it stays on a black screen after it boots :|

If you want to see it on Linux and feel like offering the developer some advice on getting Linux working and/or porting, post in this thread on Steam. However, they do say they're putting their business hat on, as they have to weigh-up their options with funding as making ports does cost time and money, which not all smaller developers can afford.

About the game:

Short media bias adventure where YOU control national news and its impact on your career, society, and family. Will you BAN the immigrants? Spin #FakeNews for ratings? Endanger your daughter?

Genetic engineering and civil unrest loom over Galixia.

How on earth would you "BAN the immigrants" through controlling the news? This game sounded like it might have been fun but from the description it sounds like another one of those games that has a heavy-handed political spin. I don't play games on my computer to learn about politics. I watch the news/do my own research. Obviously the developer can make any kind of game they like, I just feel like this is trying to cash in on political hysteria in the US and that ruins what may have otherwise been an interesting game for me. Still good to hear the developer is considering a Linux port. If it does ever come out on Linux I might look into the game deeper and possibly reconsider.

No offense intended but you are very naive. You massively underestimate the role news (aka propaganda) plays in the present - especially in the "western" world.

I know how propaganda works, and there's no denying that most mainstream media in the United States has a certain political bias. I just think it's a bit of a leap to say that a newspaper can create laws. That's all.

Hey folks, this is the dev here! Just stumbled upon the thread and wanted to pitch in.

As for heavy-handed, some effects are exaggerated for the purpose of making it work in a game format, that is true, but I am trying to rise some points and make the players come to some realizations (which go deeper than just "media corps are evil"). Whether that is successful or not, I'll let you be the judge ;)

As far as Linux support...

:D
