2D RPG 'By Any Means Necessary' is now officially available on Linux

By - | Views: 8,083

In the mood to play a retro-inspired RPG with turn-based combat? By Any Means Necessary [Steam, Official Site] has officially added Linux support. They say it was not built with RPG maker, something they're keen to note as it's something that seems to get asked as soon as people see "2D" and "RPG" next to each other.

Features:

  • Trigger additional round actions by meeting battle requirements. These can include having certain combinations of status effects or the current status of the team.
  • Scroll system to enhance character stats and abilities.
  • No items can be used in battle. Rely on the character's abilities to complete your quest.
  • Multiple side quests. Find the hidden dungeon, collect the most powerful scrolls, hunt beasts in the Norsfolk swamp and defeat all the monsters in the Pet Arena.

To celebrate, the developer has put it on sale with 66% off on Steam until March 24th.

Thanks for the tip, scaine!

Hmm , very few reviews on steam.

Also a bit curios what they mean by this and how it integrates into gameplay.

Yes, zero...

It is interesting that this wasn't built with RPG Maker.
Why? I mean, it would have been perfectly suited.
The result sure looks like it was made with it...

Can't understand why such a style of gameplay still needs such high specs.
Was very happy to install until I realised that the minimum required specs are way beyond my cheap €350 laptop.

I didn't get that part either.
Why is it such a mark of pride it was NOT made with RPG maker ?

I almost bought it because it's turn based combat RPG, and great price to celebrate the Linux version. However i found a video of gameplay, and it seems too shallow and clunky. Also Steam being super quiet dead about the game, is not very attractive.

Anyone here tested it and wants to share its opinion ?

I picked it up due to the sale and Linux support. Not off to a great start. As soon as I switched the game to full screen it displayed on the wrong monitor and switched the refresh rate of my main monitor from 144hz down to 60hz. Man multi monitor gaming on Linux can be such a gong show haha. My only options are laugh or cry so gotta find the humor.

Not trying to brag, because I didn't do anything special, but I never have multi-monitor problems in any game. Maybe it only (heh, "only" ) affects Ubuntu-based systems. Liam sure mentions it a lot.

For linux it's only Ubuntu 14.04 and 200MB free space.
I wouldn't think to much about windows showing the need for an Processor: Intel Core i7, i don't think it's correct since 2D games shouldn't be very cpu intensive.

Hey guys, I'm the developer of this game and can answer some of the questions and concerns.

After every round concludes, the player characters and the enemies can check for conditions and if they meet them, they can execute additional actions. For example, there's a female character that can execute an additional attack if she has both the Strength Up and Speed Up status effect at the same time. The player can discover these conditions for all the characters to conclude battles much faster and they also need to study enemies to prevent them from executing their additional actions.

Sorry about that, the specs listed are the ones I tested thoroughly against. I'll try to test it against lower specs and update accordingly.

Is not a pride thing. The first question I always got was if the game was made in RPG maker or not, so I thought mentioning it in the slogan was hopefully a quick and funny way of letting the player know.

Yes, the game has recently crossed the century mark in sales. While I'm happy that it has sold this amount, I'm sure it is very few for number for reviews. I definitely want to hear from the players, good or bad, as it can help improve the game.

I never tested the game in a multi monitor setup, so it's something that I can definitely take a look at.

Thanks for checking out the game guys.

Thank you for the support. I also tested it in Solus as well and it gave me the same issue so it is possible an issue with the open source drivers for AMD. Not sure myself. I'm enjoying the game otherwise, I just play it on my spare system that uses just 1 monitor.

I tried it in Solus as well as Linux Mint with the same results. I'm thinking that since you use an Nvidia GPU and I use an AMD it could be an issue the game or engine is having with the Mesa drivers. I'd try it on Arch but I don't have the time or the balls to dive into Arch at the moment. One day.
