For those who love their colourful adventure games, I spoke with Application Systems Heidelberg the publisher of Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! HD who confirmed it's heading to Linux.

This is actually a HD revamp of the original Nelly Cootalot from back in 2007 which did not have a Linux version. Since the original was a freeware game, this HD remake is not going to cost a lot. In fact, they said the price will be so small "the publisher will find it hard to discount it.". On top of that, the first year of sales will be given over to the RSPB, a nature conservation charity which is rather sweet.

Since it's a revamp, it will include support for 1920x1080 resolution, full English voice-over, Linux (and Mac) support, a streamlined point & click interface and more.

More about it:

Nelly, fearsome pirate and lover of tiny and adorable creatures, is charged by the spirit of a dead buccaneer to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fleet of birds known as spoonbeaks. Her adventure will bring her face to face with the nefarious Baron Widebeard as she uncovers corruption and wanton punning in the Barony of Meeth.

Meet a cast of oddball characters and solve puzzles in this delightfully witty point and click adventure game.

Features:

  • Rescue endangered and unusually named wildfowl.
  • Acquire morally dubious items on behalf of minor aristocrats.
  • Intercept the private correspondences of a daredevil pilot.
  • Come to the aid of downtrodden supernatural beings.
  • Be confused by obscure colloquialisms.
  • Borrow facial hair from long-dead pirates.
  • Wantonly misuse the word 'borrow'.

You can follow and wishlist it on Steam. For the release, it's been pushed back a little and they're currently hoping for it to be out in "Q2/Q3".

I'm looking forward to it, I will buy it, but...
I wonder what takes them so long. I remember a news message by them from November which sounded like it's finished.

It was awfully nice of them to single-handedly, and retroactively, invent the pirate adventure genre for us.

I do like this game a lot and have played it through twice under Wine. It is an excellent, but short, graphical adventure game that Wine currently shows in a fixed 640x480 window. I do hope that they fix the problem under wine of taking things out of the inventory. Currently, under Wine I have to drag an item around outside the inventory window for 6 seconds for it to remove the inventory window. I will buy it for a reasonable price (currently it is free for Windows) for native Linux support, better graphics and bug fixes.

Wasn't the original made with ags? If so you can play it natively anyway.
