Planetary Annihilation Inc continue to make massive improvements to Planetary Annihilation: TITANS with the latest major build now live.

This is mostly the same build I tested out previously, with a few more fixes and additions thrown in since then. Notably, the issue on Linux of the game spawning lots of hidden windows was fixed since then.

Release highlights:

  • Updated translations and work towards mod translation support
  • Improved AI
  • Coherent UI updated to 2.5.9.3
  • Lots of bug fixes, improved stability of both the client and servers
  • More libraries used updated to modern versions

The developer told me that the next update (so not this one) should include "Coherent UI 2.6.x / Chromium 40 which should also improve Linux rendering support.". This means, hopefully the next update will make it actually playable for those with an AMD or Intel GPU without a load of rendering issues. This is long overdue (and that's being kind) but the new team working on PA:TITANS are doing a lot of good work for the game since it was handed over from Uber Entertainment last year.

Don't own it yet? Find it on Humble Store and Steam.

So, is it a release in the testing branch, modern branch, base branch, or all of them? I'm currently sitting on modern-testing.

I'm really looking forward to the Mesa improvements (though alt+enter solves most issues I have with it). Looks like there's a black screen issue under Wayland as well, though that could be due to XWayland. I do not expect chromium 40 to have any kind of support for Wayland, as it looks like 72 is what's in the depots.

The other issue I had (and some friends playing on windows had this as well) is disappearing units after rejoining an game (due to a connection issue, for instance).

This is an actual release, so the stuff from the testing branch is now out.

Ideally, you want to be on the Modern opt-in beta (not the testing one), which has the more updated libs which will be replacing the legacy (default) install eventually.

I could get into this, but I find it a little stale that there is just one faction? I'm a starcraft nerd and I love zerg because they play so differently from the others, but this is a little too clinical for me maybe. I have PA:Titans and I might try it sometime anyways!

There's a number of mods, one of the most popular is "The Legion" which deals with exactly that :)

RTS is my favorite genre and it was very disappointing when this game came out and was very boring to play. Has this improved in the last couple of years of updates?

Aha, cool! So the mods have a playerbase too or, so you can find online matches? I might look into that :) Honestly SC: remastered just has so much for me but is so hard so sometimes I wonder if I should try some easier game, but then I have watched professional brood war for so long I just really love the game, so it might just be my single RTS. I've always bounced off RTS as a genre, my multitasking is weak. Thanks for the tip anyhow!

I'm not sure, but am just curious what you feel are your favorite RTS titles on Linux.

I play a lot of Warcraft III, which runs really well these days, 0 A.D, and Dawn of War III.
