Sunless Skies is a fantastic game, I've enjoyed many hours exploration in it and Failbetter Games are set to improved it. Note: You can see some previous thoughts I had here.

The Wayfarer Update is arriving on Tuesday, 9th April and it will include a big refresh to the Albion area "with a focus on providing more to see and do during voyages". This is only the first of multiple updates coming to the game, which it seems will be free.

They've included a few interesting shots like these to show how they've spiced it up a bit:

Additionally, they're going to be adding a little more terrain they say will "make navigation and combat more interesting" along with a greater variety to the creatures, locomotives and discoveries you will encounter to make it all less predictable.

More narrative encounters are coming too, with some examples mentioned (although not all may make it in this update):

  • Many new ways to encounter the gods of the skies, draw their attention or their ire, and benefit or suffer from it.
  • Suffering the attacks of certain foes may now have a variety of delayed consequences. In particular, caution when engaging Guests is now advised.
  • It will now be possible to more closely investigate several of the greatest wonders and horrors of the skies when your travels bring you near them.
  • Sometimes, you will be able to deploy your officers to pursue shore-side opportunities – these will be focused around Albion for now, but we'll add more if you enjoy them!

All sounds great to me! I absolutely adore the setting, the visuals and the incredible writing and this update sounds like a good way to stop some of the more empty moments in the game.

You can find Sunless Skies on GOG, Humble Store and Steam.

I'll definitely probably pick this up once I get my tax return. Though I only recently started playing Fallen London, which I highly recommend if you need an idle game, and have since gotten back into Sunless Sea; and I haven't even gotten the Zubmariner DLC yet. Failbetter Games you spoil me :P

Is Fallen London flash based ? Or can you play it without ?

I am wondering if this game is as grind-tastic as Sunless Sea.
That game had amazing atmosphere but the perma-death (you can turn it off) and the grind at the beginning was just iritating.

Flash no, grind kinda? You do things by expending actions points, which refresh once per 10 minutes, so if you're trying to raise a level by doing a challenge over and over, or pursuing a longer form quest it can get it bit grindy waiting for more action points. But overall I'd say avoid grinding and look for fun adventures: Significant quests often end with big stat increases. It's not something you'd play all night, but it's a great way to spend some time on your work break :)

It's also got social mechanics if you have a partner or friend to play with. The missus and I have had a lot of fun doing adventures and spending way too much time adding flavorful notes to our invites :B Great if you enjoy role-playing.
